Independence In College Essay

Independence plays a tremendous role in growing up. As adolescents, we learn how to be independent, from parents, guardians, and teachers, to prepare for adulthood. In the end of my sophomore year of high school, my parents went out of town for a few days to go up to Maine with their friends. They left me and my brothers, who are both adults, home alone. The last time they left for a few days, I had to stay with a babysitter. Therefore, it was a major independent experience for me because it gave me a sneak-peek of how to do everyday things without my parents. My parents left for four days; Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which means I had to make sure I got up on time and got a ride to school. I’m terrible at getting up, so I made sure to set an alarm every 5 minutes, with the sound on full volume. My neighbor, who was also a student, had driven me every day so I already had that planned. I would get home from school on the bus and do my normal routine in the afternoon. My parents had left plenty of food in the house, and my brothers offered to help with dinner, but we all ended up doing our own thing for those couple of days. On Friday, I wanted to go out with my friends, but I don’t drive and my brothers were either working or out themselves. I eventually found a way to stick …show more content…
This made me obligated to do things by myself, like make dinner, clean dishes, take out the trash, clean up around the house, etc. My brothers and I shared the chores which made cleaning up the house less stressful. Around dinner time, we didn’t usually eat together except for one night when we had Chinese takeout. Other than that day, I made dinner for myself. I figured out ways to make something new instead of having eggs or a grilled cheese every night. Tasks like making dinner, waking up on time, or getting to school are things that I will need to do by myself in college. This experience gave me a glance at taking care of

It is not just a learning experience in the classroom, but also outside. Turkle thinks the opposite due to technology. In Turkle’s essay she explains that “adolescents don’t face the same pressure to develop the independence we have associated with moving forward into young adulthood”(238). In the section of “Degrees of Separation”, Turkle talks about how in today’s world, it is harder to learn that sense of independence because they always have to tell their parents where they are going and need to respond when their parents text or call them. When parents do this they are not teaching their kids how to become independent and…

Becoming an adult is a momentous occasion in any young person’s life, but often it is marked by pain and hardships that push us as individuals to earn our autonomy and personal voice. There was an event in my life which pushed me to stand up to my parents and ultimately become an individual in their eyes. Life as a homeschooler was somewhat isolated until the end of my eighth-grade year. It was a damaging environment because of the constant interaction with my mother who was extremely critical and often lost her temper. The feeling that I could never please her overwhelmed me and even when I went to public school her manipulation of myself and others climaxed.…

For most students, the transition from middle school to high school is the evolution from childhood to adulthood. In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. The first few months of my freshman year had my parents rushing my grandfather in and out of the hospital because of his failing heart. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…

I was born as Regina Lim in San Jose, California, the first of my Cambodian immigrant family to be born in the United States of America and the oldest of three siblings. I grew up in a small townhouse with my large family on the east side of San Jose in a pretty rough neighborhood where there was frequent gang activity. For most of my early life, I was raised by my grandparents because my parents had me at a fairly young age and were both busy with either work or school, and sometimes both. Although my grandparents were the ones raising me for the beginning stages of my childhood, they were also occupied most of the time doing what they could to help support our family so I had to learn independence early in life. Learning how to become independent at a young age contributed to me being able to leave home when I was 19 years old.…

If I could declare independence at Zionsville High school, I Would want to declare on homework, freedom of speech, and the food served. All of these topics could benefit Zionsville High school, not only the students, but the teachers and staff that work there. Work that we take home, called homework that is most of the time due the next day can be very helpful, but sometimes more of a hassle than helping the students. I would agree on the part that some homework is helpful, but then there is homework that has no meaning and doesn’t help with better understanding the topic or unit.…

Directly in the mission statement of the United States Declaration of Independence is the proclamation that all men are endowed with certain unalienable rights, and that among these are “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” However, there is no clear cut definition of happiness nor how one can go about achieving it. Happiness is quite a subjective term that has been explored in numerous different lights. In his commencement speech to the University of South Carolina, Ben S. Bernanke describes what economics and social science have to say about personal happiness, and what those ideas imply both for economic policymaking and the choices of individuals.…
