Independence Day, or the 4th of July, is a U.S. national holiday celebrating the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Many Americans celebrate Independence Day by shooting off fireworks, going to a parade, and enjoying the hot summer weather. My family drives down to Rockwood, Illinois for Independence Day and to visit my cousins Eddie, Katie, Emma, and Hannah. My favorite memory with my cousins was when we had a giant Independence Day Capture the Flag game in their barn. I am a competitive person and I never back down from a challenge, so when Emma suggested we play Capture the Flag, I was all for it. We separated ourselves into two teams. Finally, I spied a small piece of red cloth sticking out from a hay bale near the wall. However, Malynda was sitting right on top of said hay bale. Frustrated, I slid down to tell my team. They shared my anger, and wanted to ask them to stop “puppy guarding”. I agreed, so we walked up to the boundary and demanded that they stop cheating. Of course, being stubborn, they denied our request. My team decided it was time to stop being nice, so we planned a full scale invasion. Katie was to distract Eddie by racing over to the other side and climbing up a ceiling beam. The other team cannot climb, so she would be safe from being tagged. I suddenly had a brilliant idea on how we could win. No one was paying any attention to me, so I crept behind the pile of hay bales I had climbed earlier. I snuck around it, and found a gaping hole in the floorboards. I peered down and saw a pile of hay that wasn’t made into bales yet, so I jumped down. The hay broke my fall, but I was a little stunned. I had made it to the lower level of the barn without breaking any rules! I dusted myself off and tip toed out the barn door. When I was spying before, I had noticed a board in the barn wall had broken, leaving a wide enough space for my arm. I dashed around the barn to where the enemy flag was and spotted the crack. I reached through the hole and snatched the bandana from its hiding spot. Thrilled, I sprinted back to the barn door, but I couldn’t open it. It had locked behind me when I left. I had no idea how I was going to get back in the barn to claim our victory. Then I remembered, Uncle Ed had showed me the steel ramp that led up through the barn. He used it to move hay bales from the top of the barn to the outside. I ran over to where the ramp was, and carefully climbed on as quietly as I could. I used my hands and knees to slowly start inching up the steep incline. I kept going, even when my arms grew weak from the exertion of pulling my entire weight up the ramp, I continued to inch myself forwards for the sake of my team. After
