The indentured servants arrived in America in 1607 following the settlement of Jamestown by the Virginia Company. The idea for the servants was the need for cheap labor. The settlers (Landowners) realized they had a lot of land to care for. The Virginia Company created a system of indentured servitude to attract workers. They attracted many skilled and unskilled laborers and offered them a glimmer of hope. The servants worked in exchange for room, board, lodging and their freedom. This was not slavery, as the indentured servants of men and women signed a contract by which they agreed to work in the exchange for something.
