Another way America can increase security is by monitoring the sale of weapons. The government should be alerted when someone is interested in purchasing military grade weapons. For example, if the government had already enacted such a law, then the Orlando shooting might not have happened. Omar Mateen, a United States citizen, was the Orlando shooter. He had been on the watch list of the FBI, and just recently they stopped monitoring him. Then, he killed forty-nine people and wounded more than fifty others. According to ABC news, Omar tried buying body armor and bulk ammunition from a store over a month ago, but the store owner had no high-end body armor. Omar made a call in a foreign language, got off the phone, and then proceeded to ask for bulk ammunition. The store owner did not sell anything to Omar. If the store owner had contacted the FBI about Omar trying to purchase ammunition and guns close to military grade weapons, then the FBI could have monitored Omar closely. This communication could have stopped him from killing all those people. The United States government needs a better system for tracking individuals who buy guns, particularly military grade weaponry. The FBI needs to be alerted when these types of purchase are attempted. The government needs to have a system where the security agencies can look into these individuals buying armor and military grade weapons, including semi-automatic guns. For every military grade-type weapon purchased, the FBI should ensure that the gun is not falling into the hand of a potential terrorist. Also, if the FBI is watching a potential terrorist who initiates the purchase of military grade weapons, then the purchase should be denied. If there had been a stricter law in effect, then the FBI might have been able to stop that shooting before anyone had to die in last week’s Orlando
