Most college students would like to improve their study habits. With better study habits, their grades will improve and their overall stress level will decrease. For a few of my courses, I tend to procrastinate and put off reading for the course until the last minute. This causes me to become stressed and not get enough sleep the night before exams for these courses. Due to these reasons, I would like to change my studying behavior to something more productive.
I would like to stop procrastinating and start studying more. I could use positive reinforcement to increase my studying behavior. To do this, I could reward myself with a piece of chocolate after I read a single page of a textbook. This will work when I am hungry, but not when I am full. When I am hungry, food motivates me because of deprivation. When I am full, I am not motivated by food because of satiation. When I am full I could use a different reward like listening to one song after reading a page of a textbook. I find things like music, food, and sleep reinforcing. Using positive reinforcement, I could reinforce myself with a piece of chocolate every time I read a page of a textbook. After becoming satiated, I could reinforce my behavior by listening to a song. I would like to extinguish my behavior of using social media while I am completing my assignments. Using a fixed ratio schedule of reinforcement, I would reinforce myself with chocolate every time I read two pages of a textbook. A fixed interval schedule would reward my studying behavior with a good grade after an exam. A limited hold procedure would give me a small window of time to read a page of a textbook after a certain amount of time has passed. These reinforcement schedules would provide intermittent reinforcement and motivate me to improve my studying
