Increase School Hours

Improved Essays
I strongly disagree with adding another hour and a half to the school day. There are many reasons why this would not be in the best interest of the students. These reasons are for both academic and mental health reasons. Students work very hard throughout the day and need to have extracurricular activities that foster creativity and team building skills being a part of a sports team. By limiting these activities by increasing the school day, students will suffer in the long run.

One reason I believe the school day should not be increased is because many kids are athletes. Kids who are athletes have made commitments to their teams, to show up to practice and games. Usually, starting in high school kids have practice right after school.

Should the school board add on one and a half hour ? The school board should not add on one and a half hours to our school hours, because some kids might have another job, some have sports to do, they might have something important to do. The reason they shouldn’t add on a hour and a half is because some kids or teachers might have another job to attend. Most teachers have a second job they have to be at .…

To begin with how would having more hours in the day help the students. The time we have the school at now allows all the students the time they need to sleep for the next day. According to an article by Fox News a high school in Edina Minn changing their start time from 7:20 to 8:30 has “improved attendance, decreased tardiness, left kids more alert, and even made them less likely to go to the nurse”. Since our start time is already 8:30 our students will have time to get plenty of sleep. Although the time we start school is okay the amount of time we have in the day is way too little in an article by Nancy Kalish even Paul Reville a professor of education at Harvard said “trying to cram everything our 21st-century students…

I don’t support this issue because our school athletes need to have a certain amount of practices to perform their first game. Also, our school club members need to have time to help out their club, and perform their outstanding skills. Another reason why I don’t support this is because basketball players should get to play 8 games, and 2 tournaments; with that being said, seasons only last so long and you wouldn’t be able to get all of the games in. Also, sports are extremely serious at some schools, and many people like to watch their kids exceed in their favorite…

Not Enough Time I propose that kids should have one activity during the school year. “I have so much homework, but I only have 20 minutes to finish before bed!”. Kids these days have so much going on in their lives that they don't have quality time for hardly anything else. For example, my brother has religion every Tuesday and Thursday for two hours right after school, then he has hockey on the other day's. He is one busy fourth grader, in today’s age of kids, that is typical.…

However, I would like to debate the logic of this reasoning; as an athlete myself, I understand the sacrifices I have to make when I choose to go to a Cross Country meet and skip my Chemistry Honors class. But that does not mean that we should change the current system; in fact, most colleges understand the situations in high schools and understand the sacrifices students make when devoting valuable time to sports. Besides, the current schedule is fair game for athletes; any athlete that has to sacrifice some class time needs to make it up, and I believe many of us athletes have accepted this. There’s no reason to change the start time-end time scheduling that we use now; if we truly do change our current schedule to remove the Monday Madness, then there’s no reason to change the duration and amount of tutorials, the length of class times and lunch breaks, and the start or end times. Our schedule, though imperfect, is good enough the way it is right now; we don’t need…

Schools barely have enough time to teach kids what they need to know for standardized tests. Rahm Emmanuel, the mayor of Chicago and a supporter of longer school days, said in an interview that because schools don’t have time, “students [essentially] have to pick between social studies versus science; math versus music; reading versus recess." (Schaper, 2012) At least one extra month of school would leave the door open to a lot of learning possibilities. Kids leave grade school and are not prepared for what is ahead of them.…
