To further expound upon the theme of the story, Alexie uses the incongruity of characters. Both of the main characters, William and Fekadu, defy the expected stereotypes that society would give them. William, a Native American, said that “He didn’t want to choose between Ernie Hemingway and the Spokane Tribal Indians, between Mia Hamm and Crazy Horse, between The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Chief Dan George” (Alexie 55). William is not the only character who denies the preconceived image of his heritage, Fekadu also does this.
