The Play “ Nickel and Dimed” by Joan Holden is based off of the non-fiction book “ Nickel and Dimed on (not) Getting By in America by Barbara Eherenreich. Ehernreich is an acclaimed journalist; as well as a political activist, mother, and a daughter of two working class parents. Holden and Eherenreich tell the story of Barbara, a middle aged profound journalist who goes undercover taking minimum wage jobs, seeing if she can afford to pay her rent, keep herself clean, and be able to afford the essential things in life. Some politicians such as Bernie Sanders have commented on this issue. Sander’s has spoken out about income inequality and how we need to redistribute wealth in America. He also has a page on his website to inform people about income inequality (Sanders). Income inequality is now becoming a largely debated issue within the United States. Not only politicians but also the working poor themselves are taking the issue into their own hands by expressing their views with protests like the “Occupy Movement”. Even artists like Barbara Ehrenreich and Joan Holden have expressed Income Inequality in an artistic way. The working poor is all around us, at our fast food restaurants, cleaning our houses, or even bagging our groceries. Now that this issue is being looked upon, the working poor will be able to shed a light and let people know the issues that they’re faced with every
