By now we've all heard the expression “nurses eat their young”. This statement refers to a culture of hazing, bullying, and various other deplorable treatment toward peers, most cases new hires. The ANA defines bullying as “repeated, unwanted harmful actions intended to humiliate, offend and cause distress in the recipient,” The worst aspect of this issue is that t is typically done in front of other nurses. Mentor new nurses and end the cycle- “Nurses who survive bullying early in their careers tend to carry their learned behaviors with them. They accept the bully culture as part of the job and eventually may choose to bully other nurses” (Townsend, 2012) This type of negative behavior is referred to as incivility in the nursing field.

This is not only beneficial to the facility but those community as well. There are many viable solutions for reducing incivility in the work place. First of all, facilities must institute a zero tolerance policy towards bullying of any kind. It is the responsibility for all nurses to work together to create a safe environment. Increase awareness through education during training and academia. Helping to prepare future nurses for possible hostile workplace. Not only does incivility real but it is also extremely costly. Lewis (2011) calculated lost productivity due to incivility at $11,581 per nurse per year.( Lewis, 2011)Continued education programs. Advocacy groups . There are many resources available that can assist nurses in the workplace.Research has shown that ”Few nursing schools have civility policies for faculty behavior. Formal procedures that promote professional interaction should be crafted and implemented.
