“ Art and music meant nothing to him; he could not concentrate on a picture long enough to see it. Five minutes of my performance upon a piano put him into a deep sleep”(152). It could not be the actual five minutes of listening to put Mr. Gaudet into sleep. The author wants to point out that Mr. Gaudet doesn’t interest in music and art at all. We could excuse it is hard for Mr. Gaudet to concentrate on a picture for a long time since he doesn’t like it. The second part of it shows that he doesn’t respect his wife, otherwise he will finish listening the music whatever he likes or not. He never cares about the thoughts of Manon. These sentences not only show that Mr. Gaudet doesn’t respect her wife, but also show they don’t actually love each other. The married of them is a “bargain”, Manon points out herself, “I was young, I was pretty, and I had no money. My husband was of a good family”(150). This is the only reason why they get married. Mr. Gaudet wants to get a “property” with a perfect outlook. Manon can’t influence the decision that Mr. Gaudet makes, “ When I spoke a word on her behalf, he pushed me out of the room and slammed the door in my face”(41). It is also hyperbole. Manon gets pushed out when she tries to say something. She at least say a sentence, against the thoughts of her husband, instead of only a word. It emphasize the status of women in that period. Women could affect any decision that their husband make. They are not equal by sharing their thoughts. They could not discuss about the decision they will make after. Mr. Gaudet doesn’t want to listen to what Manon says, so he just push her away and slams the door without saying any word. He never think that Manon has the same social status as him. Manon should obey his command as his property, and he doesn’t need to explain anything to
