In experiment 1, researchers wanted to see if variable weight unconsciously affects the participants’ higher cognitive processing which in this case was decision making. The researchers randomly selected 57 participants (24 women, 33 men) around the age of 23 from a mixed undergraduate/community sample (Ackerman et al., 2010). Participants were asked to assess a real job candidate by reviewing the candidate’s resume and participants were informed that accurate impressions could be formed just from minimal information (Ackerman et al., 2010). The resumes were given to the participants on clipboards, which varied between lightweight and heavyweight. After reading over the resumes, participants then had to fill out an evaluation form given on 1-7 Likert-type scales, assessing items such as the strength of applicant for the position, likely future job performance, and etc. (Ackerman et al., 2010). The last task participants were asked to do was to answer on a scale of 1-7 how important was it for them to evaluate correctly. The results of the experiment agreed with the hypothesis in certain aspects. Results showed that participants using the heavy clipboards rated the candidate as better overall and had a more serious interest in the position (Ackerman et al., 2010). Also, participants with a heavier clipboard rated their efficiency on the task as …show more content…
The participants will be asked to stand while studying the words on the projector screen. Participants will be asked to study the words on the screen for a recall memory test. The words would appear for 6 seconds on the screen followed by a prompt for the participant to write down their judgment of learning. After recording their judgment of learning, participants will press a button signaling for the next word. After the 25th word, participants will have to switch out clipboards to fill out a new form since the previous form will be filled out completely. The new clipboard 's weight will be the opposite of the clipboard they just had in other words, if a participant had a heavy clipboard at the during trials 1-25, then they now have a light clipboard. After the studying portion of the experiment, participants will be allowed 5 minutes to write down all the words they can
