Incident in the Life of a Slave Girl Jacobs is the author of this story. She was born in 1813; this story is describing her life. Linda is the substitute of Jacobs in this story. Linda was born as a slave, but she did not have any strong feeling about being a slave until her mother died. Linda had a happy childhood, even her families were all slaves but they have a warm and comfortable home. Linda’s mom never let her and her brother-William feel they were slaves. Linda’s mom died when she was six years old. Until then, Linda realized everyone around her was talking about her being a slave. You never knew what it is to be a slave; to be entirely unprotected by law or custom; to have the laws reduce you to the condition of a chattel, entirely subject to the will of another.”(2349) During Linda’s adolescent stage, she was treated without any respect and value. Her master, Dr.Flinton would sexual harassed her and also looked down on her. Dr.Flinton always finished his sentence by asking if she understood what he was saying. To me, I think this statement is the most radical claim in the whole story. Linda was asking for help! She felt hopeless and helpless to live with a monster and he was ready to eat her at any moment. She was suffering in her life; she had no right and couldn’t do anything without her mistress and master’s permission. None of any women or slaves have the right to condemn or criticized her because she was scared and angry about her sexual history, unless they have been similarly situation and they were victimized. “You never exhausted your ingenuity in avoiding the snares, and eluding the power of a hated tyrant; you never shuddered at the sound of his footsteps, and trembled within hearing of his voice. I know I did wrong. No one can feel it more sensibly than I do.”(2349) The author used a direct way to describe Linda’s life, taking her readers to that controversial moment back to 19 century and she was asserted and protected her right to interpret her life story to all readers.
