Career: Social work requires a different number of skills in which I believe I possess. Since my elementary school years, I have always had an interest in child development or anything child related because as my hobby I babysat. I remember at the end of junior year of high school; my parents pressured me about picking the college I wanted to attend. I applied to several colleges, but I wanted to closer to home so I chose the University of Mississippi. Prior to choosing this institution, I remember watching several great movies and that all shared something common.…

This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

In the article, “The Mystery of Motivation,” the author Gary Drevitch, speaks of poorly thought out incentives to motivate good people in forms of cash and social rewards to do their best, but the ending result may actually cause them to be at their worst. Throughout the article, Drevitch gives examples of incentives that have backfired on: companies, schools, banks, fundraisers, hospitals, and even cash incentives or allowances at home. Although, the author gives several example of poorly thought out incentives, he does mention an incentive program that was economically successful. Several charities provide gifts to people who donate; for example, organizations hold drawings to reward those who give money. The practice of offering incentives for charitable acts appeals to various organizations because people are more likely to donate if the receive something in return than if they do not obtain compensation. While rewarding people for providing aid to the underprivileged is controversial, incentives are ethical because charities receive more donations than they would if they did not give back. Even though all able people should contribute to helping others, most do not. American society glamorizes an excessive amount of possessions and money, and as a result, people are unlikely to give items away; for example, a substantial…

This leads to another aspect of my professional practice, which is engagement. Even though I may not have a lot of experiences working as a social worker, I can use that to my advantage where I can come in with an open mind to new ideas and even more positive outlook. I find that sometimes social workers or any other helping professionals who have been in the field for a long time tend to stick to the same practices and mindset that can negatively impact clients. For me, I would engage with my clients in open discussions regarding topics like what they are going through, what they like to change, future goals and so forth.
