Single mothers struggling to stay in the system while their kids are out with no guide or nurture from a mother. When a single mother is faced with incarceration and kids many turn to their significant other to take care of the kids or an extended family member to care for the children. Many children who have their mother in jail are most likely to be raised by a family member or friend. Those unfortunate ones are taken by social services and placed in a foster home. Children deal with a lot of issues due to a loss of a mother which include depression, misery, detachment, and delinquency. Raising the risk that the children end up in prison themselves as adults. “Approximately 70% of all women under correction supervision have at least one child who is under 18”(mallicoat). Many woman feel some kind of shame, remorse, and sadness for not being able to protect their children. In addition mothers feel ashamed to be in prison and does not want their own children make a visit to prison. Those kids that are able to see their mothers aren’t able to feel the touch of a mother rather than just look at their mother through a glass. Mothers usually feel hopeless not to be able to hug or kiss their kids. Frequent visits, phone calls, correspondence, or any kind of communication from family members, especially from their kids, can increase good behavior and support.
