When I was notified of the inadvertent ethical violation, I was mortified. Not because of any consequence necessarily, but because of the mere idea that my integrity or moral beliefs would be questioned. I did not mean to imply that those ideas belonged to anyone besides who I cited, albeit incorrectly. I could not believe that I allowed myself to make such a simple but catastrophic mistake. How is it that I came to the decision that the reference should be cited it parenthesis when clearly it should have been quoted? How could I put myself and my team in this position? How would this have impacted the supervisor of the team? How was the mistake caught and why wasn’t it caught sooner? Will this ruin my career? What do I do now? What steps are to be taken? I am still kicking myself. I wanted to crawl into a shell but instead the first thing I did after meeting with my supervisor was to meet with the SERC chair to inquire about what steps to take.

Initially my experience was so negative and full of consequences that I could not clearly see the lesson. Although I have not experienced the desired guidance from my mentors, I have found my way through the literature. The part that I struggled with was the intent. I had not intended to lift words from the authors or pass off their ideas as my own, which I inadvertently did by improperly citing the reference. From the moment that I was notified of the mistake, I was notified of the possible disciplinary action that would be taken—there was no guidance in that. Although at the time I could acknowledge that I should have cited the information differently, I was confused by the ethical part because I had always thought ethics and intent
