Initially my experience was so negative and full of consequences that I could not clearly see the lesson. Although I have not experienced the desired guidance from my mentors, I have found my way through the literature. The part that I struggled with was the intent. I had not intended to lift words from the authors or pass off their ideas as my own, which I inadvertently did by improperly citing the reference. From the moment that I was notified of the mistake, I was notified of the possible disciplinary action that would be taken—there was no guidance in that. Although at the time I could acknowledge that I should have cited the information differently, I was confused by the ethical part because I had always thought ethics and intent
