Inadequate Mental Health
The juvenile justice system is now faced with a continuous need to provide mental health care for the youths. The original purpose of the juvenile justice system was to offer rehabilitation and set out preventative measures to the juvenile delinquency system, the system focused more on the rights of the children over punishment. The juvenile system was set up to divert children from going through the adult harsh process in the adult justice system. A number of factors limit the juvenile justice system from providing adequate mental health services to the youths, top among them include insufficient resources. They lack enough resources in terms of funding to effectively provide mental health services owing to a large number of youths suffering from mental illness within the juvenile justice system. Juvenile justice institutions lack administrative capacity to effectively implement a mental health treatment program. Pre and post-adjudication can be utilized with the effective use of proper screening and assessment to ensure all youths with mental health disorder are get comprehensive treatment and support services (Kutcher & McDougall, 2009). Earlier identification of mental health disorder would prevent the escalation of mental health disorders when placed under the juvenile justice system. It also important for train law enforcement officers, juvenile officers, judges among other people who make key decisions about signs and symptoms associated with mental illness. Technical assistance is also necessary to the key decision makers to help them make an accurate judgment for every
