Excessive Sodium
A high salt intake can decrease calcium levels by causing more calcium to be excreted. This may be a reason to why his calcium levels are low. For the excessive intake of sodium, I will present him healthier alternatives to eat from. Instead of potato chips, he should replace them with veggies. I can ask remove potato chips from our home and replace them with fruits and vegetables. Instead of him getting hungry and cooking a whole meal, he can replace that with a fruit or veggie. Getting enough calcium and exercise is important for increasing his bone mass to prevent osteoporosis later in life. Since he is consuming milk at school during breakfast and lunch, I suggest he comes home and drink a glass of milk with his dinner. He can also consume low-fat yogurt and/or Orange juice which are both good in calcium. Another route for increased calcium intake is getting Calcium-fortified cereals and breads. For a snack during the day he could eat a bowl along with milk.
Monitor and Evaluation
I will monitor his progress by routinely collecting data and information on what he ate each day. This will allow me to understand if the changes are being implemented according to my expectations and if there are challenges that need to be addressed.
