Inaccuracies In Kingdom Of Heaven

A lot of people do not realize that their favorite movies, based on true stories, are not as true as you think they are. There are tons of movies out there that are not as true as they seem, Kingdom of Heaven is just one example of many. I can think of at least 3 movies that do not go along with the true events they are based off of. So during the movie Kingdom of Heaven there were several inaccuracies that do not quite fit in with the facts of history. There was the appearance of the long bow, the inaccuracy of the knighting ceremony, and the non-chivalry acts committed during the film. During my analysis, I will be comparing and contrasting these examples from the movie to actual historical events. So sit back, relax, and be prepared to …show more content…
This is inaccurate, because according to Arthur Cotterell “Early 12th Century: The Longbow was developed from a Welsh bow that had been used against the English. During the numerous skirmishes with the Welsh, the English had witnessed the power of this weapon”. It is very inaccurate they would have those at this time. One weapon they did have accurate during the movie was the crossbow. The crossbow was invented in Ancient China during 700 BC. They would have used crossbows during this time. This is why the appearance of the longbow in this movie is inaccurate and the appearance of the crossbow is accurate.

Secondly, I will be talking about the inaccuracy of the knighting ceremonies during the movie. In the movie the knights would slap the squires in the face after saying a certain statement. According to David Bachrach
“A squire knelt before a knight, who struck the squire on the back of the neck with the palm of his hand. Later, a tap with a sword replaced the blow with the hand. This tap was called the accolade, from the French word col, meaning neck. The tap was followed by the words, "I dub you

First of all, as a knight Balian would not have had intercourse with Sibylla. The knight would have held a higher stature for God and his religion. According to David Bachrach code of chivalry says “A "true knight" had faith and a deep love of the Christian religion. He defended the church and was ready to die for it. He loved the land of his birth and gave generously to all. His strength served to protect women and the feeble. A knight championed right against injustice and evil, and never surrendered or flinched in the face of the enemy”. Although Balian did some non-chivalry type things in the movie he also did die for his beliefs and his kingdom. So even though he did some non-chivalry things, he also did some truly knightly things as well. This why the non-chivalry that were committed in the move are inaccurate from historical

Introduction While the word chivalry is associated with gentlemanly behavior today, in the Middle Ages it was the code of knightly conduct that encompassed religious, moral, and social aspects. It was the way medieval knights were expected to behave both in society and on the battlefield. Being a knight refers to being part of the cavalry and was a highly respected position, in part because of the mythology that developed surrounding knightly chivalry.…

Chivalry was the moral code that the noblemen of the middle ages strived to follow. This code outlined how a knight should behave in battle and to a greater extent how they should act at home. Gawain and the Green Knight and Marie De France’s Lanval can both be read as explorations of chivalry. Both works present chivalry as an impossible ideal rather than a fact of medieval life. Lanval, Gawain, and Arthur’s court are all pillars of the chivalric ideal, in Marie De France’s Lanval Arthur’s court is said to have, “had no equal in all the world”(154) and in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Arthur’s court is said to consist of, “the most courteous and chivalrous knights known to christendom;”().…
