Despite individual’s best intentions, most repeatedly find themselves eating large amounts of unhealthy foods, despite knowing that it is causing harm to their health. In the reading, “In Your Face: How the Food Industry Drives Us to Eat.” Author Bonnie Liebman proposes the question dealing with addictive foods to professor Kelly Brownell on what do you mean by reward pathways? Brownell says, “There are pathways in the brain that get activated when we experience pleasure, and drugs of abuse like heroin hijack that system.”(487) The reason as to why this happens is because processed junk foods have such a powerful effect that when consumed the brain gets this feeling of pleasure involving neurotransmitter’s like dopamine. This can lead to serious harm like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. However most people just don’t have the control to stop eating and this is where the food industries large production and quantities of unhealthy food adds to the addiction.
