In The Womb

The film In the Womb gives the audience much perspective and insight into the complicated process of pregnancy. As defined by the textbook, “vaginal intercourse is the insertion of the penis into the vagina,” which is the only kind of sexual activity that can lead to conception. It is astounding that upon ejaculation, 500 million of the smallest type of human cell travel to the fallopian tubes within the female, but the body ensures that only one sperm can become attached. This is provided that the male is not too old, and is in good health. Prior to ten weeks of pregnancy, the fetus is able to be seen through an ultrasound. My best friend was born prematurely, and was no bigger than the size of a hand. Because of her extremely early delivery, her parents were told that she would have some of the dysfunctional issues described in the video, such as learning disabilities, deafness, and difficulty walking. However, growing up, she had none of these issues, aside from slightly weak hips and asthma. Despite the warnings from her doctors early on, she grew to be a strong and healthy dancer, and is currently studying to become a nurse. Furthermore, I have witnessed the heartbreaking realities of premature births first hand, as I formerly volunteered in the NICU at my local hospital. In this unit, I was responsible for changing the towels and blankets beneath the tiniest humans at the hospital. Seeing their very red skin and little bodies attached to many wires was truly moving, and gave me a greater understanding on the precious value of life. Moreover, knowing that the technology to save and sustain these new lives is available changes the lives of the numerous hopeful parents and families longing for a
