T Melose once said “Every work of literature leads up to one great moment of insight, one instant in which the truth stands revealed.” He tried to express how everything in a literary work comes together to orchestrate a perfect moment of epiphany when a character or reader can finally see things as they really are. This style of structure has been seen in many different successful works of literature throughout the ages. Authors like, dark romantic writer Washington Irving, and Kate Chopin, feminist author, have both successfully used this device in order to enhance their writing.…

In the short story “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, the plot relies on the ignorance of the reader that Laurie is Charles until the end of the story. A critic states that it is too easy to realize Laurie is Charles, and that you would have to be as trusting as the parents to not realize. In the story, a reader would be persuaded to not see that in reality Charles is Laurie, but is made simple to see who Charles really is by the facts stated in the story, such as the aggravation shown towards Laurie’s younger sister by spilling her milk, and the disrespect to the family when he slams open the door and yells, “Isn’t anyone here?” Laurie also shows constant and consistent argumentation towards his father with rude and imposing comments, such as when…

In order to fully comprehend a story and to avoid misrepresentation, books must be looked at from both the perspective of the victim and the perpetrator. The novel All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is told from two different points of view. One, by Marie-Laure who is trying to escape the terrors of World War two the other, by a young Nazi soldier named Werner. These are two drastically different perspectives yet they are both vital to the story. On one hand, there is a victim of the depraved Nazi party, and on the other, there is a perpetrator of war.…

When it comes to how my reading of Gilman’s story has been modified, it has completely changed the way I see the entire situation based on the article. Some things mentioned such as the section “Ghosts and Mal Murders” make me do see how the story could be viewed in such a light. However, I can also see how their incompetence could affect how they get the accurate meaning of the work. Another thing that has affected my reading is the section “Textual Variants”; I completely understand how something as simple as a dash could inflict the reader to interpret the words a different way. When reading anything the simplest things such as a comma could affect how the reader reads it which in turn can affect hoe they view the meaning.…
