Julia Alvarez was born in New York before her parents returned to the Dominican Republic. This is where her father got involved in the underground rebellion against Rafael Trujillo, consequently falling into deep trouble. They were forced to return to the U.S. just four months before the leaders of the rebellion, the Mirabal sisters, were murdered by the brutal regime.
