In the novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez uses point of view. This allows each character to have their own personality through the way they are depicted through the writing, making them more relatable to the reader. All of Dede’s chapters are written in the third person spoken from Julia Alvarez's point of view such as in chapter nine when she states, “Dede worries this woman will never find her way back to the main road in the dark”(Alvarez 172). Minerva’s chapters are written in first person, in the opening sentence of chapter six she says,” I know the rumor that got started since I’d been living at home a few years” (Alvarez 84).
