Dominican Republic Realizations In the early 20th century the Dominican Republic was ruled by a very powerful dictator. Families struggled for their privacy and personal beliefs. One family that struggled was the Mirabals. The Mirabal sisters set history in the Dominican Republic by standing up to the President, Rafael Trujillo. Since the Mirabal sisters stood up to President Trujillo it created a revolution that changed their nation. Historical fiction can also be defined as “Timeshift stories, in which a modern character is turned back, or more rarely, a historical character is transported back to the present, or to a time period not his own” (Dalton). Historical fiction can, also, be described as “A fictional story in which elements of history, be they persons, events, or settings play a central role” (Dalton). The novel tells us how the Mirabal sisters helped in creating the Dominican Republic revolution. Dede Mirabal explains all this information in an interview, to Julia Alvarez. The interview makes the novel, a historical fiction novel, too. The interview consists being a time shift story, since Dede is transported back in time. In the Time of the Butterflies plot ,also, shows that it is a historical fiction novel. The plot is based off of all real facts that happened to the Mirabal sisters. For example, the sisters being chanted and being called the butterflies is a real fact making it historical. The novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, is considered fiction since Dede retold the story of her sisters lives that she did experience.
