In The Gloaming Analysis

In my reading of this week, I picked out two stories though similar are very different. I’m comparing the stories “Everyday Use” by Alicea Walker to “In the Gloaming” by Alicea Elliott Dark. The main woman in both stories have such a strong scene of family but yet fairness. Both have their struggles but remain strong. Each story brought a different emotion from me. “Everyday Use” brought a feeling of shame the family had for themselves, yet the sense of victory at the end. “In the gloaming” brought the feelings of sadness, wonderment, and angriness towards some of the characters. In “Everyday Use”, the mother wants for nothing. She does her job and the youngest daughter (Maggie) is following in her footsteps. The other sister (Dee) who doesn’t want to be like either of them and wants nothing to do with that life style. As Dee grows up and goes away to get married to later to come back with all her finery to try and get two quilts that were made just to show off. She doesn’t want to use the quilt she just wants to hang it on the wall. Finally the mother has put her foot and say you can have one not both or pick other quilts. It had nothing to do the heritage of the quilt or where each patch came from it was just put it and show it. “In the gloaming” theme, the mother has come to the realization that her child is dying and she has lost herself in caring for him. She has made excuses for her husband on why he is not there. She has done everything for her child and her husband was never part of it. As her son (Laird) is sitting there talking to her about how she should get a dress for funeral something nice but elegant. He is almost take care of her as she is taking care of him. Each woman has a big decision to make and conquer their fears in each story which creates great
