“Can’t you see that I’m suffering” (Greenberg 278)? 7am. Wake up. Blink once, blink twice. Your vision starts to become more clear as the light burns your eyes. You finally adjust to the bright morning sun. 8am. Rush off of the city bus in the hopes of having time to get coffee before work. Take a deep breath. The feeling of cold wind brushes across your rosy cheeks. You take a moment to look at the thousands of people rushing by. 8:30am You stand on the corner of the sidewalk waiting to cross the intersection. You stop moving to observe the old lady standing beside you. Constant movement, laughter, and conversation goes on around you. 8:33am. You made it to the other side of the street. You see the buildings and people that surround you. You can see the world, but can the world see you? Visible, but living with an invisible illness. Depression; a silent …show more content…
Chance faces significant challenges as he battles mental illness. “You’d probably be better off without me,” he suggests (Maynard 20). Although he may think he’s doing what’s best for his family by leaving them, he doesn’t realize the long term consequences. The lonesome feeling Mr. Chance has each day as he sits at the window of his hospital room only grows stronger as the days go by. Some would say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but in this case, he loses all connections he once had with friends and family. While the doctors and therapists try to work with him, “for a few days at a time, he might act like he doesn’t even see them” (Maynard 28). Isolation; a time to find yourself. However, a time that may also cause you great pain as it can leave you with too much time on your hands. Mr. Chance adapts to the environment of the hospital and eventually understands the reason for his being there. He benefits from the time he is alone in the end, as he is able to better understand himself and his purpose in life. Finding himself and his own happiness comes before making others
