Reflection On Looking Out Looking In

In the book, Looking out Looking in, you manage your identity in two separate ways. The perceived, or private, self is a how you view yourself. It is called private, because it is likely we do not reveal all of our characteristics to others. The other way is the presented self. This is how others around you will see you, it is your public image. Sometimes there is a pretty large gap in between the way a person views themselves, and the way others view them. A person can act rough and tough when in public, but when alone they could turn into a big crybaby. So, with that in mind, I am going to be discussing how others view me, how I view me, and how I came to know myself. I think the first thing people notice and perceive me as is quiet. Well, it was a pretty long journey that took me all of middle school and almost all of high school. In fact, even now I am not entirely certain who I am. It is a bit of a mystery, and it is taking quite a while for me to unveil it. How I have come to know who I am for the most part is through the people I have interacted with through the years, and how I have reacted to certain situations in my life. The way I reacted to all the different folks in my life has definitely shown what things I like in a person, and what things I do not like. Some people I have met introduced me to many new things that eventually became something I am interested in, and have shaped my personality into the one it is today. All the good, bad, happy, and sad times in my life have also played a big role on how I would react to things now. Every person and every situation I have encountered, has made me who I am. It changed constantly in the past, because I was still trying to fit everything together. My friends, my interests, my style, my sense of humor, it was all changing constantly. It slowed down as the years went by, but even now it is still changing. Even so, I still know more of myself no than

While I have not had nearly as many hardships in my life as Jeannette Walls in her book The Glass Castle, there are still some things that her and I have in common. Throughout the book, Walls endured many struggles while traveling with her dysfunctional family. Jeannette’s father is constantly getting in the way of her success, from stealing her money to not always making her go to school. Eventually, she leaves her parents behind and makes her way to New York City, where she goes to college and finds success. Similar to how Jeannette had to overcome the obstacles between her and her success, her parents in The Glass Castle, I had to overcome the obstacle between me and my success, my bones.…

Change is something that isn’t instantaneous, and I do not want to rush into something that I am not. Over the last few years, I have opened up towards a new perspective, and I am no longer afraid of who I am. I know at times I can be introverted, and at other times I am quite the opposite. The way I deal with problems is by acceptance and evaluation. I simply work towards understanding my issues, and then I resolve them by improving my flaws in regard to the standards I have set for myself.…

I and Jack met the patient in the Healthy Heart Program waiting room upon which our patient James discussed his interest in music and ability to play musical instruments with us. We discussed how Jazz was a form of rebellion against traditional music and how it was born in bars not college campuses. Next our patient was taken to a patient room to have his vitals take. It is interesting to see that in hospitals so much of the data collection and recording regarding a patient is done using technology.…

I attended the “Do You Matter” public speaking event presented by Erick Chavez & Andrea Rascon. This interactive session was to allow participants to explore their privilege and identify how they can use their privilege to advocate for others. Erick gains attention in his introduction by addressing the agenda of the event and provides a coherent design of the presentation. He resumes his presentation with acknowledging community guidelines, such as “… respect, “I”-statements, one voice all ears, [and] confidentiality.” He spoke extemporaneously, mostly speaking from a manuscript.…

I noticed that it was getting easier to talk to people without being too awkward in conversation. I started to take risks and open myself up as a person, regardless of the reactions of those around me. I realized sometime in my ninth grade year that I had always been this way, I was too scared to embrace it. This is something I consider one of my greatest failures, but also my greatest development. My younger years were difficult due to a combination of my parents struggling to pay bills and providing for my sister and me, lacking academic determination which kept me a B student for too long, and having no confidence in any personal social interaction.…

“Who am I?” This is a question that everyone my age has likely asked themselves. The first thing that needs to be figured out is, what defines a person? Does family history decide who you are going to be? I believe it is the things you pick up from the people you are around, the things you go through, and the things you learn in your life that decide who you will become.…

After reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, I realized how our lives are both similar and completely different. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that someone who is fairly famous and someone who has no significance in this world can be alike in many ways. Having read this book a few years back, it was actually helpful to me. It may have been helpful in the most indirect way possible, but helpful nonetheless. The Glass Castle had a small part in helping me through my problems with depression and anxiety.…

    Reframing Reflection

Journal #7: Reframing When I came across the topic of reframing in this week’s readings, I immediately thought of myself, and the way I tend to handle difficult and/or stressful situations. Unfortunately, when something doesn’t go my way, I tend to become irritated and ask myself why I have such bad luck. Recently, however, I have noticed myself reframing issues, even when I had never heard of this as a topic before reading chapter 10. For instance, in the beginning of the school year at USC, I was denied a waiver for the USC health insurance plan, which ended up costing me $600. I was initially pretty angry that I would have to pay this amount, because I did have insurance, just not insurance that qualified to allow me to obtain a waiver.…

Everybody goes through a stage in their life where they want to be independent. In Joyce Carol Oates “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” the main character Connie shows many signs of wanting to just grow up and move on to the next stage in her life. I relate to the story through the character Connie, as she represents and gives off different themes that contribute to the bigger picture of the story that I find myself relating to, such as a desire to grow up and having two different personas that showcase an internal confusion of who I am. Increasingly throughout the last couple of years in my life, I have found myself having a growing fire within me that is pushing me to want to become more independent and act more as a grown up.…
