I was very entranced, didn’t want to look away. There were a lot of parts that were sad. I felt bad for Hester and her children. I felt disgusted by and angry at her oppressors, particularly the preacher. It made me think about very real and prevalent issues like race and class. I think this play could open up a lot of people's’ eyes to a new perspective, because what Hester goes through is not easy. These are also issues that tend to be controversial so it’s important that they’re being addressed through this medium. I would and do use a lot of Suzan Lori-Parks’ techniques in writing a script. I really liked her “confessions” and I think it would be interesting to implement on my own characters or try as a writing exercise. …show more content…
They did a really good job at making it look like it was actually underneath the tunnel. The way it was painted in the colors they used made it very realistic. There's also sort of minimalism to it that was great because it kind of showed that you don't need to represent every single object in the play, you can use things to stand-in for other things. Spectacle was my way in to the performance because of the imagery, especially the graffiti on the wall, such as the letter A and the word “slut” on her wall. I liked how color was used in this performance design. The dark grey colors suggested that we were under a dark tunnel. It contrasted with the bright red that refers to blood and the scarlet letter. The fact that it was striking blood red reminded me of the moment when she kills Jabber. It also just really stood out against the gray wall, as well as the fact that it's such a derogatory term, and because of the connections that its draws to the Scarlet letter. It immediately sets the mood and foreshadows what Hester’s about to go through in the play. Also, the image of the doctor and the Reverend and pretty much all of her men with their super clean crisp more expensive outfits and the doctor with his all white jacket perfectly clean contrasted their dirty shoes and older looking
