The subconscious never shuts off, and it is clear the Freud understands this. The brain is a powerful component of our bodies. They run continuously until we die, and even then we really do not know what happens to our mind. When dreaming we need censorship. Freud explains this through anxiety- dreams. These dreams “a repressed wish has found a means of evading censorship”(Freud 923). During our days we are fully aware of what is going on in our lives, however when we fall asleep our bodies have no control, we are unconscious, but our brains are still operating. If you have you have had the dreams like I have had, you can actually feel the pain of what is going on. Sadly I have this type of dream often, which supposedly means that I am self conscious about something, which is true. This goes with Freud’s point though. If I have anxiety about my appearance, that anxiety will create physical effects while sleeping. This is why as soon as you wake up from the horrible “teeth dream” you check to make sure your all of your teeth are still there, and that the are hurting anymore. Physical pain in a dream will take away the censorship that would have been there. If the censorship had been there we probably would have had a pleasant dream. However I still believe that even if physical sources are bypassing censorship there will always be censorship. That is why we will have a dream about our teeth, and not about what we really stress about. Another example is how “we can never die in our dreams”(I swear I have once). If in a dream you fall off a cliff you are not supposed to see yourself hit the bottom. It would be too much physical stress for our bodies to handle. So even though we are having this horrible dream, and there is a real life situation that has triggered this dream, censorship will not allow it to go as far as
