In Search Of Respect: A Literature Review

Great Essays
While there have been many books that have made a lasting impression on me, In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio, an ethnography read in my Cultural Anthropology class, fall of my sophomore year is still one that stands out to me. This was the first ethnography that I have ever read, causing me to be fascinated with the study being done. Reading about Philippe Bourgois’s experience of living in Harlem during the crack epidemic, made me realize the extreme negative effects that unemployment and poverty can have on a population. It was eye opening to learn why these individuals, who are looked at as cold hard criminals, were pushed to do the things that they did to support themselves and their families. This ethnography touched upon …show more content…
I choose to write a literature review on push-pull factors of international migration, after sitting in two immigration and assimilation classes with Dr. John. Although I ended up not needing the class as a requirement, after being there for two days I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. Writing this literature review caused me to research and learn about migration and immigration, push-pull factors, other cultures, globalization, and world theories. Beginning this project I had little to no knowledge about international migration and globalization however, by the end of my writing process I felt as though I had a much more thorough understanding. In the end, when presenting my work to my fellow classmates I felt as though I had taught them something as well which was an extremely satisfying feeling. This has become a topic that I would like to read and learn more about after the research that I have done. Overall, I believe this is a project that I will remember forever, because of the amount I learned and the influence it had on …show more content…
I am taking away from the sociology program, the importance of standing up against discrimination and to make others aware of their actions. Secondly, I am taking away the importance of diversity. As a result of making many friends different than myself here at Kutztown, I was able to learn in depth about other cultures, religions, social classes, etc. The sociology program helped me to realize the importance of learning about the different aspects of others lives that I did. Finally, I believe the most important theory I have learned was the functionalist theory. I feel this theory accurately describes the world today and I have find myself relating it to things in everyday life and throughout courses I have

“With No Direction Home: Homeless Youth on the Road and in the Streets.” focuses on the life and culture of homeless youth in New York City, especially Tompkins Square Park. The book uses ethnographic research to study the elusive lifestyle of “street kids.” The book examines the lives of the kids before and after they move onto the streets. According to Kottak, “ Anthropology explores human diversity across time and space, seeking to understand as much as possible about the human condition.” This study does that in spades.…

In today’s society many individuals take on different routes while trying to conduct a specific research project in order to receive accuracy data. Doing research is not always easy; in fact it may come with some odd beginnings and different challenges. In the novel Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh, Venkatesh is a college student studying sociology at the University of Chicago. He goes on an uncommon route by entering an environment surrounded with gang members and black people living in poverty. He is interested on how minorities, specifically black people live their life on a daily day basis, “I’m a student at the university, doing a survey and I’m looking for some families” (Venkatesh 12).…

By taking his theory into account as we humans can reassess the way we prioritize our lives based on our materialistic wants to our idealistic needs. People will learn the true value of a human such as loving one another and not our electronics, which is certainly considered more valuable than the people we are sitting beside. All these needs that disable us from functioning to live a rich and meaningful life to living only to become rich, literally. Us humans live our lives to work when instead we are supposed to work to live. Further, people overlook entire life but life is right here, right now, and we aren’t promised tomorrow.…

For this discussion question, I have chosen to discuss the Victor Rios reading “Stealing a Bag of Potato Chips and Other Crimes of Resistance,”. I found this reading to be incredibly interesting as it framed and described the policing of minority populations, through the story of a young man named Ronny. The reading outlines how young black men, and racial minorities in general, tend to grow up in environments where they are deprived of the resources and opportunities to succeed in life. Therefore, these groups are often forced to create their own opportunities to counteract the negative circumstances that they are placed in (poverty, incarceration, violence). This process of creating culturally specific opportunities and resources, is called…

In Randol Contreras’ book, “The Stickup Kids” he does an ethnographic study of what is known as the Crack Era in the South Bronx. Contreras studies how society shaped people growing up in the South Bronx that led them into the world of drugs and crime in order to fulfill the American Dream. He does so by providing detailed field notes, creating a sociological framework of how components such as culture, deviance, socialization, crime and race contribute to the society as a whole. In this book, Contreras specifically studies a small community of friends in his neighborhood and how their life changes along with the loss of jobs and deindustrialization of the economy. Contreras starts off by describing how his friends started to become “stickup”…

This theory can be applied to nearly every point in history and to every culture. Through a Marxist lens everything can be explained including the discrimination between classes of all types of people. The novel Of Mice and Men shows multiple examples of this theory throughout the story. The novel works with two men that are trying to make their way in the world. Along the way they meet a lot of people that are restricted…

It is truly hard to watch and sit through multiple PAC events with very opinionated students who share their opinions but when another student voices out that they have a different view it is considered extremely disrespectful. One thing I enjoy about this school is Respect Week, but Respect Week is gone about in the worse manner imaginable. Respect Week revolves around admiring and highlighting students that are apart of the LGBTQ community and being a minority. Students go sit up on a stage a talk about how they were disrespected and discriminated against and how everyone must respect them and that only their opinion matters. For the past two years this school has hardwired into our mind that there is only one side to every story.…

Philippe Bourgois is an Anthropologist who, through extensive long-term participant observation, throws himself into the underbelly of contemporary American society. The dark, disturbing themes within his reality filled photo-ethnography, Righteous Dopefiend, attracted a wide audience. In ‘Righteous Dopefiend’ Bourgois and his research assistant Jeff Schonberg followed the lives of 24 homeless heroin injectors and crack smokers in San Francisco over a period of 12 years. The ethnography was written to shed light on the controversial topics of poverty, addiction and homelessness, and to reveal how political and social structures are responsible for such a destructive part of society. Bourgois’ ethnographies boast strong influence of both political-economy and interpretative anthropology.…

    What Is Worthy Of Respect

Emotionally based opinions are not worthy of respect. Free expression is fine, but just because someone shouts something out, it doesn’t mean that there are facts behind it. I will respect them as a person for expressing their own opinion, but if it is just something out of their head, no, it is not worthy of respect. For example, if two people are having an argument of social media, and only one person is being reasonable, then the other person is arguing for no absolute reason.…

I chose the Sociology degree programme because it is a subject I have found to completely and utterly grab my attention as well as interest me. Sociology naturally draws me to learning more and sharing my knowledge with others. Studying Sociology will give me a number of transferable skills I plan to gain, examples being environmental awareness, communication, and critical evaluation which will help me later in my career. Recognizing how environmental awareness influences other people either at work or home can help sociologists understand them. Communication is essential to any character, specifically in my career where I must interact with others on a daily basis.…
