William Golding’s use of adjectives and word choices in this paragraph help dehumanize Ralph’s, Piggy’s, and Samneric’s attackers. In this first sentence of the paragraph, Golding describes the aggressors as so: “...there was a vicious snarling in the mouth of the shelter…” (Golding 167). The use of the word snarling instead of yelling or some other like word is to animalize the attackers and make them more beast-like. He also describes their attacks as, “...hitting, biting, and scratching.” (Golding 167).…

In an article titled “The Police Were Created to Control Working Class and Poor People, Not ‘Serve and protect’’ by Sam Mitrani the editor states that police officers were never made to serve and protect the population. They were not made to stop crime or promote justice. Instead, Ms. Mitrani states that around the nineteenth century “police officers” were made to protect the new age of wage-labor from the so called threat of the working class. Then she continues on to give evidence of such cases but in the same sense “police officers” had a choice on where or not they wanted to hold such a title. The evolution and meaning of a police officer has changed since the 19th century.…

When coming to ask Aibileen to help her write a book about the life of a black citizen, Aibileen informs Skeeter that, “they set my cousin Shinelle’s car on fire just because she went down to the voting station… I do this with you, I might as well burn my own house down.” This unveils the prejudiced treatment against African Americans. The fact that they burnt down their cars for wanting to obtain basic human rights such as voting, reveals how unjust society was to the black community, and exhibits the harsh consequences inflicted on them. Attempting to reassure Aibileen, Skeeter comments, “I promise I’ll be careful,” but still terrified, Aibileen responds, “this already ain’t careful Miss Skeeter, you not knowing that is what scares me the most, scare me more than Jim Crow.” Skeeter’s response to Aibileen dislays the oblivious the white community may have been towards the impacts of their actions, and this is particularly significant, as Skeeter is one of those more compassionate towards the black citizens.…
