An experiment was conducted to determine dry matter disappearance in dairy cows. The In-Sacco method was used. In this experiment, there were three different fistulated cows used in the testing. The feeds being analyzed for dry matter disappearance were first and second cut hay. 5 grams of hay was measured out, placed in nylon bags which were closed at the top with elastics, and put in a larger laundry bag. The reason for the use of nylon bags was that the pore size of the bag allows for microbes to enter the bag to digest the feed, but none of the feedstuff could escape the through the pores. Three of these larger laundry bags were prepared, with one being placed in the rumen of each cow. There were four different periods of time in which the laundry bags were left in the rumen for incubation. The first was a 10-minute blank. The second was a period of 7 hours. The third was a period of 24 hours, and the fourth and final was over a period of 48 hours. After each period of incubation, the bags were extracted from the rumen and washed for one minute under cold water to stop microbial action, then the bags …show more content…
It allows for the study of the rate and extent of digestion in the rumen (Hartling, 2016). Also, the values provided from the In Sacco technique provide an indicator of nutrient released into the rumen (Hartling, 2016). It also provides a good indication of potential digestibility and the flow of nutrients into the small intestine (Hartling, 2016). The In-Sacco technique also allows for a fairly broad range of testing to be done on the feedstuff once the incubation has occurred. A couple of tests that can be carried out are Dry Matter Disappearance, which was conducted in this lab, and also the Neutral Detergent Fibre can be carried out (Hartling,
