The NPR clip A Lesson “In How Teacher Became ‘Resented And Idealized’” talks about the history about teachers and their role in education. The one thing that I found that was really interesting was that all educators where all male something I am glad does not exist anymore, for many reasons of course there are still male teachers, but most of today’s teacher are female. The article or the clip talks about teacher competence how teaching has become controversial profession and they have become this person that is a great and bad thing for our society today. As I listened to the article I was surprised to know how teaching became a woman’s job and how it led up to where it is today. I liked how the this clip integrated African- American history,

In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. This story swept the whole country by storm because Shirley did the unthinkable and got 72 of 84 students into great schools but was later terminated from his position at Alisal High and was not rehired, and this caused many problems because some believed Shirley was an unfit teacher for writing some of his student’s college essays others will argue and say he was a great teacher. I agree with those ; hence, who think Shirley was a great teacher because he actually did something for his student…

The third essay that Kohl writes is called Excellence, Equality, and Equity. The essay takes a look at the number of issues that surround the discrimination and racism situation that he has encountered while teaching. He writes about a situation he experienced while visiting a school in Texas and stresses the importance of teachers for knowing and integrating their students’ cultural backgrounds. Kohl also stresses the importance and wants to remind those who are teaching and those who want to become a teacher, that every student they come in contact with, their heritage and…

After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…

It is important for teachers, who are white, to be aware of what whiteness is and what that means for their students. Teachers must also be aware of any bias and prejudice that they may have toward their students that are white versus their students that are black. In the documentary, a black student said that he believed that one of the reasons that white teachers sent black students to the office more than white students was because they did not know how to “deal with” them and they did not want to be judged for trying to. A teacher also spoke in the video about how she believes that students react differently to teachers based on their race. Two teachers could say the exact same thing to their students but they would get a different reaction based on if they were white or…

I understand it, and I feel the no non- sense, stern, we have no time to waste, slamming the door way can be very effective. But I believe there’s a way I may be perceived as a black man versus a woman teacher speaking to their class in this matter. A Mrs. A might be perceived as motherly by outsiders, but a Mr. A might be perceived as an angry black man yelling at those poor children. This also is the same I believe when it comes to showing affection towards children. It seems “normal” for a woman teacher to show affection but, it might seem a little suspect for a male teacher to show the same affection.…

He said that he thinks women tend to use more words and are a bit more expressive in their teaching style. On the other hand, he said he thinks that men use less words and more hands on applications to explain ideas when they teach. He expanded saying that he thinks that is changing because they are being taught that no matter who the teacher is, the big difference is the learning styles between boys and girls varies. He finished off his answer stating, “How can the teacher teach to boys and girls while utilizing all teaching strategies?”. This is exactly what we discussed in class, the idea or stereotype that men use less words and are more hands on, while women tend to use more words, expressions, and…

Over this semester I think one of the most eye opening things we talked about was how women were uneducated but were the primary educators. This is crazy for me to think about, because they were expected to teach the children about everything that was going on. This also shows how much education has evolved since then. I think that it is our responsibility as teachers to the students to teach them about the issues, this can mean using other sources besides the textbook to teach the students. There are certain chunks of our history as a country that is left out in many textbooks, they try to make it seem like they are less terrible that how they really are.…

You walk into a school in a rural town in southern Missouri and take a look down the hallways. All the students are at their lockers or heading to class. If you take a look into a few classrooms you will see female teachers preparing for the day’s lesson. Now take a look in the office and you will see a male principle enforcing the rules and distributing discipline. This phenomenon is all too common throughout most schools in Missouri.…

Natida Nivasnanda Tannen makes her purpose clear in the closing paragraph of her excerpt. She acknowledges that “equal opportunity” is highly unlikely in discussion and participation (Tannen, 2015, p.373). But she encourages students and teachers to explore different options to teachings that could benefit both male and female students, catering to their differences in language rather than tipping the scale towards one gender. Tannen illustrates that women in the classroom are the ones that are affected negatively, their potential of succeeding obstructed by the traditional American styles of teaching.…

Teachers who work in bad districts, or go on strike are used in media as focal points. Individuals becomes the mass and those who are taught as a mass are then seen as the individual. Media portrays teachers as the cause of trouble-them alone. The profession may have been caused by the act they are named after, but the dehumanization of these people began with discriminatory, or pre-judged views of the individual. The individual is not the mass, but a saying such as “those who can-do-and those who can’t-teach,” is the beginning of the downfall of such a noble position and the dehumanization of the teaching profession.…

In the class I was able to help with lesson plans, grade papers, tutor students, attend the teacher meetings, and go on field trips with the students. The teacher gave different examples of how to handle diversity in the classroom and allowed me to have experience with dealing with some of the issues that arose.…

Thus it is important for a teacher to fully understand the needs of their children, and provide lessons and accompanying resources that will fulfill their needs. Teachers need to be prepared to enter into any situation, and differing school. Whether it be a well to do suburban school, or an impoverished urban one. A teacher, who can connect with the students, and develop engaging lessons, can be effective in any environment of learning. If this can happen, then it is possible for us to have an equality of opportunity in…
