Visit To The Chazen Museum

For my Art History Museum paper I chose to visit the Chazen museum here in Madison to observe a piece of artwork that I wanted to furthermore dig into. As I walked through the museum, the artwork appeared to be very organized in each area. On the second floor, the painting that really caught my eyes was one done in 1880. The artwork is an oil painting created on canvas with an old man and a little child in it. The painting was, In Grandfather’s Arms, by the artist Jozef Israëls. The painting seems to be very realistic. In it, a child is sitting on his grandfather 's lap while the grandfather is comforting the child. This artwork could be classified as still life and as a portrait because it is a scene that you could see in everyday life.

Lines were used to show that the grandfather is comforting the child while the child is resting up against his chest. The lines also help indicate that they are sitting on the chair in a regular home. Even though the lines help us distinguish between the different parts of the painting, the lines are very subtle instead of hard bold strokes. They appear to be more of a sketchy line where the artist just made the rough outline so that us observers can differentiate between the different parts of the painting. The lines are used just enough to separate the individuals from each other and the room they are in. They also help us viewers to get a view of what kind of environment the people are accustomed to. Jozef used lines in a very subtle way so that it looks more natural instead of forced. The lines on the clothing of both the grandfather and the child show that there are some creases and wrinkles in the clothing but nothing to a major extent. The artist used just enough creases on the clothing to make it look realistic. It looks like they are in wood home with a hutch and a table standing near the child and her grandfather. If the artist hadn’t used lines, we may not have been able to see what the artist wanted us to see from this painting. We may have not noticed that there was a child on the grandfathers lap, we could have just thought it was a …show more content…
Natural colors were used to establish the environment of the room the child and the grandfather are in. It also helps show the kind of clothing that people wore in this time frame. Brown colors are used in many traditional paintings to show off realistic events just like this painter chose to do. When using oil to paint, the colors usually end up having a yellow tint to them once they dry. This yellow tinting is from the oil sitting and going through oxidation while it is drying which produces a more yellow color. This tinting makes sense because when you think of olive oil it has a yellow color just like any other oil. When Jozef chose to create this painting on oil canvas he probably had smooth blending in mind. When painting with oil, the oil stays wet for a longer amount of time allowing starting and stopping flexibility during the painting. This painting has very subtle blended colors which oil is good for painting with. The oils have a very slow drying time which allows the colors to mix together on the canvas. With that said, his lines don’t stand out as much as some other paintings because you would have to wait until the next day when the oils are dry so that the brushstroke doesn’t pull all of the colors together.
In Grandfather’s arms by Jozef Israëls really stuck out to me because you always see grandparents holding their grandchildren. Sometimes a child’s favorite thing is

The focus on primary colours around the outer registers shows that this piece was probably very loud to the eye. Each basic shape alternates between red, blue, yellow, or white. The reason these colours were used together was most likely due to them having the strongest pigments as well as being the most readily available to use. On the inner main register, a darker brown colour was used to differentiate males from females, who were depicted as very fair-skinned as was a staple of the time period. In a time when the human form was shown simply and uniformly, colour was often used as the defining factor to show things like gender and status.…

“Flora and fauna were vitally important to her pre-Columbian ancestors and during her life this precious resource was cultivated by the oppressed indigenous population she championed. She connects herself to the natural world by echoing the hairs on the vegetation and monkey in her own tresses, styled in her signature indigenous fashion. This bond with nature is reinforced by the curves of her monkey’s arm that embrace her neck, the root-like ribbon slung around the monkey (which she used as a symbol for life-lines), the bone-like necklace Frida wears, and the green ribbon woven so skillfully into her hair that she becomes a part of the leaves” ( Ortega,J.,L.2014). All the forms in this painting are smooth and given special observation to details. Fine…

Charles Emile-August Carolus-Duran’s piece titled Portrait of an Artist in her Studio represents the action of a women painting. This piece was made in the late 19th century (c. 1880) and was considered one of Carolus-Duran’s great society portraits. The piece’s present location is the La Salle University Art Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and its original location was *****. This portrait is oil on canvas, and the “quick, loose brushwork” technique can be accredited to masters such as Diego Velasquez and Edouard Manet (placard.) Just as the painting suggests, the painting’s subject is an artist, many say Carolus-Duran’s wife or mistress, in her studio.…

I chose to analyze the The Family - 1941 portray for this essay because I like the usage of the colors on this work. I feel confident analyzing colors in artworks because I learned about the emotions transmitted through colors in various art classes that I took in High School and College. Jessica Risner Heather Ward English 1101-41 October 5, 2015 “Love You Forever” Literary Analysis One of my favorite stories to read to my daughter is “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch. The story is about a mother who sneaks into her son’s room, once he is sleeping, and sings a song to him. She sings to him these words “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be (pg. 14).” My favorite part about this story is that once her son is a teenager, and even a grown adult, she still sneaks into his room and sings her song to him.…

Hung Liu decided to paint this using oil on a canvas. By her using this media it made it appear as if it was photograph. This allowed the viewer to get a flash of the past since it made it look antique and the dripping effect by the oil further contributed to that very thing. Hung Liu style is quite impressive as well. Throughout most of her paintings she uses oil canvas and frequently has a great deal of contrast of colors within them.…

Artists Gustave Caillebotte and Clide Hassam are rewound painters who spent their careers depicting scenes of everyday life in various levels of impressionism. Combined, the two provide for an excellent comparison of how specific techniques used for their works elicit different emotions and interpretations. Specifically, Caillebotte’s Paris Street: Rainy Day and Hassam’s A Rainy Day of Fifth Avenue capture similar scenarios in roughly an analogous time frame, allowing viewers to focus strictly on the differing techniques used. . From their perspective to color, they are able to evoke feelings of clarity and uncertainty respectfully An important note to mention prior to analyzing the works is to mention that neither artist captured the scene better; neither painting can be objectively considered superior.…

And, lastly this art work depicts a morally uplifting story, promoting civic duty over the personal, reflecting the values of the Age of Enlightenment and neoclassical…
