Perry is being easily manipulated by Dick. Although Perry does not agree with many of the things Dick has in mind including Nancy he still feels compelled to be along side him. The two seem a perfect fit for each other as Dick encourages Perry to continue as Perry uses his emotional state of being to reason with Dick. Dick eventually gets attached to Perry and doesn't want to lose him as the excerpt progresses. Perry for some reason is able to commit murder and doesn't let his emotions influence his actions which is odd for him considering he intends to use them in all of his reasoning and seems to have influence on each of his…

The main theme for In Cold Blood is madness. Capote challenges the readers by having them determine if Dick and/or Perry are mentally unstable and if that it is the main cause of them murdering the Clutter family. They both go under a trance at different points and it is to the point where they cannot remember what they are doing or what had actually happened. However, both Perry and Dick easily plan out the murder and their escape routes with their so called unstable minds. The definition of madness is “a state of severe mental illness” or “behavior or thinking that is very foolish or dangerous” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).…

. In comparison to Dick, Perry is illustrated as weak and less masculine. Perry lies about his killings and power to build up his character to be as worthy of Dick. All Perry wants is for Dick to see him as equally “hard, as much the ‘masculine type’ as he considered Dick to be” (Capote 112). Similar to Joel and Idabel’s relationship, Perry seeks self-identification from Dick.…
