Chapter 1
Quote: “Looking back now across fifteen years, I could see with/ great clarity the fear I had lived in, which must mean that/ in the interval I had succeeded in a very important undertaking:/ I must have made my escape from it,” (Knowles 10).
Analysis: Gene recalls a time when his life was so fearful, that he was not able to identify the absence of fear. However, in this particular quote, he begins to realize that his life has progressed and turned for the better. This is because, unlike in his youth, he now knows what life is like without fear. This quote connects to Gene’s individually, because it demonstrates

He is a modest icon. In other words, the people in Devon see him as a prideful leader and athlete but really he dislikes those who live to gasconade. However, not too many people see this side of Phineas. Only people like Gene, who he genuinely trust, can see his humble personality.
Chapter 9
Quote: “I do not know/everything there was to know about myself, and knew that/I did not know it; I wondered in the silences between jokes/ about Leper whether the still hidden parts of myself might/ contain the Sad Sack, the outcast, or the coward” (Knowles 127).
Analysis: This quote showcases the misapprehension of Gene’s identity amongst his peers and himself. He realizes that one true thing that he knows he about himself, is that he cannot apperceive his true identity. He realizes this in the midst of light hearted jokes regarding Leper, who recently enlisted in the army.
Chapter 10
Quote: “I felt a measureless relief when it/ occurred to me. There was some color, some hope,/ some life in this war after all. The first friend of mine who ever/ went into it tangled almost immediately with spies. I began/ to hope that after all this wasn’t going to be such a bad/ war”(Knowles

He is known as Phineas’ right hand man throughout Devon. Gene has a somewhat cowardly persona and this is displayed when Phineas is able to convince him to go to the beach even though he has an examine the following morning. Gene is also convinced by Phineas to be a part of the Super Suicide Society, a group that Phineas started. However, Gene can also be a very expressive person. For example, how he gets in a fight with Cliff Quackenbush and how he intentionally forces Phineas off the tree. Despite the barbaric acts of violence, Gene is also very intelligent and aspires to be the top of his class. Phineas recognizes Gene’s academic endeavors when he says “you work too hard” and “nobody at Devon has ever been surer of graduating than you are” (Knowles 51). Lastly, in some ways, Gene is a very optimistic person. He was happy to hear that Phineas was still alive, even though he is not able to perform sports. Another example is when he feels a “measureless relief” (Knowles 140) when he finds out that there actually is a war raging. What differentiates Gene from Phineas is the fact that Gene grows as the story progresses. In the beginning he was Phineas’ side kick, but now he is Phineas’

In Cold Blood is the first murder novel that I have read and it kept me on the edge of my seat majority of the time. The characters were amazing and I liked most of them yet the murderers in particular rubbed me the wrong way. Let’s start off with the man who I dislike the most in the novel: Richard Eugene "Dick" Hickock. Personally, I believe that he did kill a Clutter family member, despite his testimony just to not make his parents look bad in front of other people. He is a cunning sly fellow who does well when he has an upper hand in any given situation and loves to take advantage of other people.…

Holcomb in western Kansas, where everything is humdrum. If you were ever to pass through Holcomb you wouldn’t stop and visit. The village of Holcomb has nothing that catches your interest like Capote said, “ The Land is flat, and the views are awesomely extensive.” In Cold Blood, Truman Capote uses tone to describe how uneventful town.…

Although the infamous murder of the Clutter family happened in November of 1959, Capote’s story was not published by Random House until late September of 1965. It was a long process for Capote to gather all the information needed to pull off this story. He traveled to Holcomb shortly after the murder and then he spent the next six years writing and researching the background behind the town, the family, and the two killers. While the book was considered a success by many “In Cold Blood is the work of art, the work of an artist" (Garrett 80), critics believe it was Truman’s last great work. He never published another book after In Cold Blood, and he even felt that the writing of the story took too much out of him: “ ‘it scraped me right down…

Gene often mentions how he is not as good as Finny at a plethora of social and physical activities. Despite resenting Finny for his superior skills at many things, Gene resents himself for not being as skilled in sports or as socially adept as Finny. As the story progresses, Gene internally rants about how he is better than Finny. “I was certainly becoming the best student in school; Phineas was without question the best athlete, so in that way we were even. But while he was a very poor student, I was a pretty good athlete, and when everything was thrown into the scales they would in the end definitely tilt towards me…

Because of his actions and problematic behavior, this makes Gene the weaker character. In a comparison of the two boys, Knowles implies that Gene is nearly an exact opposite of Finny. Driven by rivalry and bitterness, Gene’s entire mindset is comprised of comparing himself to others and becoming the best at everything. On page 24, one moment changes everything and will cause Gene to spitefully hurt his best friend.…

Also, Finny shows that his behavior is typical of that of a human being in general is when he does not want to know the truth about if Gene really did cause him to fall off the limb. This is typical behavior because a lot of people choose not to believe something that they hope is not true. These two characters illustrate a vast majority of human beings in general through their behavior throughout the novel. To conclude, Gene and Phineas are two unified characters who are brought together by their opposite personality traits.…

What drives people to the edge? So far gone that they commit heinous crimes, and become compulsive liars for only their benefit. That’s the question Truman Capote tries to answer in his novel, “In Cold Blood”. Capote analyzes the two killers of the Clutter family, Dick Hickock, and Perry Smith, to inform the audience on who they were and not just what they were. First off, the Clutter’s were a family who lived in the small town of Holcomb Kansas.…

Even when reflecting on his time during the war and Phineas’ death, Gene admits that he killed his enemy before his duty. Gene states, “I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there” (Knowles 204). All of Gene’s actions were part of his egotistical plan to beat Phineas and dominate their relationship. The way in which Gene characterized Phineas as his enemy also made his actions justifiable internally.…

The novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote details the investigation of the seemingly motiveless murders of a small farming town family, the Clutters. In the book, the tone of the writing creates a feeling of emotionless fatalism, emphasizing overall the unfairness of life, as can be seen throughout the novel, especially after the murder of the Clutter family. A fatalistic tone is expressed mainly in the dialogue of the murderous characters Dick and Perry. The unfairness of life is shown through the conflicting suffering of the Clutter family and the suffering in the lives Dick and Perry. It is expressed throughout the narrative, mainly during the middle and later parts of the book, that characters are powerless to do anything other than live…

Through the use of rhetorical strategies, Truman Capote manipulates the reader’s emotions by portraying Perry Smith in In Cold Blood as a sympathetic character. Perry Smith, along with his partner Dick Hickock, murder the Clutters, a well loved family in the town of Holcomb, Kansas. This small town consists of people, who immediately outkast the murders because they only understand their own lives, and nothing outside of Holcomb. Although there are two murderers, this rhetorical analysis will solely focus on Perry’s traumatic childhood. To share an outsider’s point of view of the situation, Capote uses simile, alliteration, and theme to influence the reader to sympathize with Perry, rather than to condemn him.…

In the novel “The Great Gatsby”, the author F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrates Jay Gatsby’s perpetual optimism through his struggle to balance his ideals with the reality of the world around him. This optimism presents itself in three aspects crucial to the development of his character in the novel, Gatsby’s delusion, his burgeoning ammorality, and his irrational love for Daisy. Firstly, Jay Gatsby’s continuous attempts to balance his ideology with his actuality cause him to become deluded. During the beginning of the novel before the Nick has actually met him, he’s told many wild and extraordinary rumors about Gatsby, such as the one he hears from Myrtle Wilson’s sister Charlotte.…

Being the narrator and attempting to cope and work with Gatsby, Nick Carraway presented himself to be the most admirable character in the novel. Throughout the plot, he shows his ability to cope with various social situations efficiently. For example, upon settling in East Egg in his new home, he receives an invite to a party by an entire stranger. Bravely, he attends the party, despite not having any previous knowledge of the host other than potentially erroneous rumors such as being a murderer. His aforementioned ability is shown through his mingling and his amiability when first meeting the mysterious Gatsby and other attendees of the party.…
