“How is she?” Bass asked, sitting down in the chair beside Miles. He had just returned from yet another dangerous mission that he had volunteered for.

Miles sighed. “You can’t keep doing this, Bass,”

“Doing what?” Bass asked as he took Charlie’s hand in his.

“Trying to get yourself killed. She wouldn’t want that.”

Bass lifted his tortured eyes to Miles. “It’s no more than I deserve. Why don’t you go get something to eat. I’ll stay for a bit and read to her.”

Charlotte wandered through her chambers, touching this, and touching that, relishing all the small mementos from her time here. She couldn't help but feel that once again she would never see her home again. Elizabeth stood in the doorway for a moment watching her. "Charlotte, the carriage is waiting. It's time to go." Knight Captain Jona Falx strapped his small sub-machine gun to the back of his snugly fitting Verian uniform as he stepped out of the comfort of the Verian Protection Embassy and onto familiar Cerinian soil. As was his custom and duty every other week, he traveled the insane, but less than time-consuming distance from Veris Alpha to their heavily influenced state planet Cerinia to check on his designated family. Since Cerinia was still a land sprawling with conflict and brutal tribal warfare years before the Verians made their appearance,…
