In Bloom Film Analysis

Final Paper

Films rarely ever have just the one meaning in which is apparent to the audience. These meanings are hidden or masked in some way and can be discovered by being attentive on the right aspects of the film in question. The meaning of a film is not neatly wrapped within the confines of dialogue and the obvious, but rather within the minute and subtle such as lighting, color and sound. In Bloom utilizes the minutia of these techniques to grasp and delve into the idea of loss of innocence and the journey into the realization of the harsh realities of human nature. How the lighting of the scene is done can have drastic effects on how it is perceived. Within the scenes of In Bloom the lighting is often telling an independent story compared it the one that is being displayed by the actors. One such style of lighting in this movie that gives chilling connotation to the events of the plot is the heavy use of fluorescent lights in quite a few different scenes. For instance in the case of Natia’s family, it is clear that the relationship between her parents is toxic yet the movie spends very little time on why this is the case. It touches on her father’s alcoholism for a brief moment but it seems like there is much more to the story. The lighting in the house shows the emotionless and cold feelings that the family has towards each other. Natia is quick to wish death on her father for what he did after her parents fight, just as her grandmother seems more concerned with the spilled wine than with the well being of the mother who has clearly been beaten. The lighting highlights and gives a more emotional and psychological insight into the dysfunctional nature of Natia’s family and thus her introduction to the angry and flawed nature of human
