The purpose of this study is to test the differences between age in relation to risk-taking in correlation with impulsiveness and reaction time. The reason being is because we are interested in figuring out whether or not younger adults are more prone to risk-taking and impulsiveness than the older adults. There have been multiple studies, which have confirmed younger adults are more prone to risk-taking and being more impulsive than their older adults. Risk-taking and impulsiveness is a huge part of a human being’s life, whether it be driving or deciding whether or not to buy something. Impulsiveness means “doing things or tending to do things suddenly and without carful thought: acting or tending to act on impulse” (Merriam-Webster, 1828).

The researchers wondered whether or not ethnicity played a role in a shoot or don’t shoot scenario. There were a total of four studies completed in order to test their hypothesis. The researchers used a video game which showed a series of backgrounds and a targets. The game had 20 backgrounds and 80 target pictures. They also had 20 men pose in these pictures. Ten of these men were white and the other ten were black. Each man was placed in a different image holding an object (can, camera, cell phone, wallet) or a gun. The subjects had to decide as quickly as possible to press a key to shoot (L), or to press a key not to shoot (A). There were a total of 80 trails and the game kept score with points based on how you well were guessing which man had a gun or not. After the completion of the game, the subjects went through 16 recognition trials to see if facial characteristics were considered. In study two, they gave participants a shorter time to respond. In study three, following the end of the game, the subjects did a questionnaire to measure prejudice attitudes and associations between African Americans and violence.
