They children became self-reliant and found ways to learn through fun and interest. Margaret and Rachel McMillan believe in children being able to learn from firsthand experience. In the nursery school run by the McMillan sisters, there was a strong emphasis on children being outdoors and playing outdoors. The children learned to set their own tables for meals and how to share food. The children at the McMillan school also were able to have naps on cots during nap time. When I was younger and going to elementary school I looked forward to going to school. I knew at school I would be able to eat a good breakfast and lunch. I grew up living with my dad, he didn 't work and received social security disability. Growing up on a limited income I enjoyed being able to go to school and have good meals for free. There are a lot of children just like me out there who can 't wait to go to school to eat breakfast or eat lunch. Being able to get a free or reduced school lunch is very beneficial for children. It was a great help for me and my siblings growing up. Until taking this intro to early childhood course I never really put much thought into how school meals came about. I just kind of assumed that providing meals was something school just did. I thought it was amazing to learn that two women fought to get the 1906 Provision of School Meals Act passed so that way children would be able to have a nutritious meal during their day at school to help them learn
