Coworker Behavior

Improved Essays
You work at a small company that is growing fast and you are on the fast track to getting promoted as the company hires more and more employees. You have been jockeying for this promotion for some time. When you started at the company, you generally got along with everyone. As time went on, though, your working relationships changed. As you started your ambitious climb to the top, you slowly alienated your coworkers with somewhat less than amicable behavior. You sometimes felt lonely or outcast when left out of conversations or not getting invited out on a Friday night to blow off steam but you figured it was a small price to pay to get to the top and get the position you wanted along with its perks and benefits.

You bring your lunch back and find a seat at a table in the break room with one of the few coworkers with whom you can still carry on a conversation. While making small talk, and gulping down your cheeseburger, you see another coworker walk by the door and make some reference to their disheveled appearance correlating with their absentminded work performance. Your coworker puts their fork down and folds their hands on the table and leans toward you saying, “You know his wife is really sick and has had to quit her job. He is the only source of income for his family and he is trying to take care of her and their kids.” You stop chewing for a minute and feel a slight sting as the words sink in and you realize that your statement may have been harsh in …show more content…

You reach for a napkin and do not see that it is sitting on the table under you big carbonated caffeine infused drink. You yank the napkin and the drink immediately flips over and spills all over your three ring binder soaking all 25 pages with sticky sweet liquid. You sit and stare in disbelief as you realize that there is no way that you are going to be able to make the presentation today and your chances of making that promotion slipped away with your Coke. Your coworker stares at the mess for a moment and then looks at you and says one word, “Karma.”

That weekend you sit on your couch and reflect on the last few days and the word your coworker said keeps coming back to your mind, “Karma”. You decide that you want to change your Karma and figure the best way to do that is to figure out just what Karma

One common recurring theme in “trickster stories” is the concept of karma. The idea that the trickster can be devious enough to set a trap that catches his prey, but fails to evade other traps, often of his own design. This is apparent in the book “Trickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth, and Art” by Lewis Hyde. He writes, “and yet, as the Loki story indicates, the trickster can also get snared in his own devices. Trickster is at once culture hero and fool, clever predator and stupid prey.…

As the distance increased, the work environment became more and more hostile. First, it was small things like low, overheard taunts about my style of dress and quiet demeanor that slowly grew to whispers of racial slurs and epithets throughout the week. I tucked the insults away and did not want them to ruin my experience. Two days before my departure, I surrendered my defiance and told another counselor of a rival group about my “dilemma” when she asked me did I enjoy camp.…

Oedipus Rex is an extremely ironic piece that shows how someone’s luck can extremely change.
