The Importance Of Teaching A Foreign Language

The topics that I searched gave me interesting insights about ways to improve my teaching practice as well as make the students’ learning process more pleasant and individualized. As a result, I made some changes in the ways I teach. For instance, I included games in the classroom and most of the students, not only those selected for this study, enjoyed them. By doing so, I believe I made the language class more interesting and enjoyable. Another thing that I did differently as a teacher was to consider the personal background of the students and how it influences the learning of a new language. Justin comes from a small town where everybody speaks English and in his opinion it was not necessary to learn a second language. However, I occasionally spoke to him about my personal background and how in Italy students learn two languages starting from middle school. I explained that the purpose of studying languages was not just the one of speaking with native speakers of those languages. First, I believe it is important to remember that each student is different. Although it seems obvious, I think I should not think that students are all the same as well as give things for granted. Some students never studied a foreign language before, therefore they need guidance from the teacher about how to study the material correctly so they can be successful. Other students may have prejudices and a distorted idea of other cultures. I think it is my job as a teacher to show the students that “variety is the spice of life” and when learning a language it is not exclusively about the grammar rules.
