Improving My Critical Speaking Skills

Over the course of this semester, I have learned about things that I did not know and things I did know. Some things that I have learned is how to be a critical thinker but in more detail. Over the semester, you gave us a list of questions that we would have to answer after analyzing a piece whether it be a painting or music video. The questions consisted of considering the audience of the piece, considering the argument of the piece, and even considering what we thought about the piece. These questions seem simple enough but they taught me alot. Something that these questions have taught me is that even though you think you have analyzed every aspect of something, there is more you can say. This is proven by the small groups that we got together in almost every day of class. Each time I would talk to somebody, they always had a different opinion about something that I never have noticed before. The insights of other class helped me slowly improve my critical thinking skills. My critical thinking skills went from stating the obvious like how the Beyonce music video we watched was a movement for Black people to Beyonce is making a statement about black children …show more content…
Even though I said that this helped improve my critical speaking skills, speaking in front of others was the most challenging part of class. I do not know if you have noticed but I am extremely shy. Because of my shyness, I never spoke out loud in class. On top of shyness, I do not like sharing my thoughts to others because I am scared that they might sound silly. To me personally, I feel that these people surrounding me, at this very moment, have better responses to the questions that you asked. This may not be true, but it was how I felt the whole semester. I feel that gaining confidence in what I think is the area in which I need to improve. Once I improve, it might get easier for me to speak up in class and in small

Having in mind the target group for my project I tried to keep the objectives realistic to achieve. Because I wasn’t able to discuss the plan of the event with the participants, I thought how not to put them off or make them hesitant to engage once grab their attention on what I’m trying to get across. With technology and data changing everyday it is essential that one is aware and proficient in knowing how to mentally obtain and process information. To do so, you must determine which literacy skills are most critical. Literacy skills are made up of a wide range of learning techniques, one includes, “Accessing the need for information effectively and efficiently” (ACRL). Another, of equal importance is to “Evaluate information and its sources critically” (ACRL). Finally, you would want to incorporate information learned into your own understanding.…

This course, Social Work with Special Populations, provided me with an excellent opportunity to grow in my journey of becoming a culturally competent social worker. Each assignment, whether it was in class or at home, had its own impact. For example, the in-class videos we were shown and the discussions we had provided me with visuals and real-life examples of the challenges individuals from other cultures face. Additionally, learning about the curative factors and existential elements was very helpful as well. I work best when I’m provided with step-by-step guidelines and I feel as if I will benefit by using the existential approach in my career as a social worker.…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

When it comes to public speaking I feel more confident talking to individuals that I know. The purpose for that is because I know them and they know me, plus there would be only positive judgement coming from them. Furthermore, thinking more in-depth of topics that I would be comfortable with is anything that I am strongly avid about which can be family, education, and even a little bit about of politics. In addition, my confidence is high when I am debating something I feel is important and giving insight to a situation that I have been through.…

    1. Molnar, Boninger, & Fogarty (2011) discuss the increasing pressure for schools to partner with businesses in order to alleviate some of the budget shortcomings. Corporate involvement in education would be an easy way “for schools to pick up a few extra dollars” (Molnar, Boninger, & Fogarty, 2011, p. 2). However, Molnar et al. (2011) identify four different harms that are associated with commercialism in education: psychological, educational, health, and cost.…

Sometimes the hardest part of doing something is getting started; that was the case for me when I would have to write an essay because I wouldn 't know where to begin or what to say. I wasn 't that great of a writer, however, with the help of freshman composition I 've learned to conduct effective research and gained the ability to synthesize my ideas to engage the reader to read more. By using critical thinking and comprehension skills I have demonstrated in my portfolio the ability to inform the reader in a way they can understand. Although I have increased my ability to write engaging hook sentences and structured thesis statements, I can use improvements in my sentence development, such as phrasing, transitions, and in-text citations. Growing up in a small town, I was never the one to stand out in a crowd. I would usually stand in the distance, while my little brother and sister shined to be spontaneous like always. To me, public speaking has always been one of my biggest weaknesses in school. Because of this I would not describe myself as shy, rather anxious to preform a speech. This year one of my main goals is to make my weakness one of my strengths.…
