Improving My Career Goals

From the moment that I began freshman year in high school, it was emphasized to me that college had to be part of my academic life. Both of my parents attended college, my father has a Ph.D. in Theology and my mother has a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting. Even though they both are college graduates, they never made it a big priority to speak to my brothers and I about going to college, that was addressed by my teachers and academic counselor in high school. I have always completed everything that have set my goals on, having said that, there were two things that I had made up my mind about, I was not going to go to college and I was not going to join the military. Two years after I made that statement, I joined the Army. 19 years later I find myself as a senior at Austin Peay with the plans to graduate after the Spring of 2018. After taking this course, I have altered my graduation time frame. My career goal has not changed, I remain resolute on attending a graduate program to attain a …show more content…
First, I must change the classes that I have signed up for the 2017 Fall semester. Since I transferred to Austin Peay, I have simply gone down the list of the courses required to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology without given it much thought. Now I know that the courses that I take while completing an undergraduate degree are vital to be successful in my chosen career field. My current GPA is not sufficient to even consider applying to a graduate program, so I must take an aggressive approach to raising my GPA. I have about four classes that I earned an F, this must be corrected by retaking the courses and earning an A. Another to preparing to attend a graduate program is gaining experience in research by joining one of the faculty and assisting in their research. I must become more involved in the psychology club, this will also help me gain experience with others that have the same

I also gained tremendous encouragement from this motto when I decided to pursue a nursing career in my forties. Some of my family and friends have been telling me that it’s unwise to give up my business and start a new career in a different field at my age. They think I’m at a huge disadvantage compared to most of my young classmates. However, I believe that my genuine interest and enthusiasm in nursing will help me to excel in this field and achieve my career goal. After all, “nothing is impossible to a willing heart”.…

As I was finishing up high school I didn’t think I would go to college because I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do with my life. I don’t think that I was very motivated about figuring out what I wanted to do so I push that in the back of my head. I didn’t really have the knowledge I have now about college due to the fact both my parents didn’t finish high school, which had a lot to do with my lack of motivation towards school. I think as you grow up your role model which is your parents should tell you the importance of school, but also asking your child their dreams and aspirations. Today I am in college, which I feel is a very wise choice I made for higher education.…

Keeping my three personal and professional goals realistic, I would have to say a personal goal is to finish school at SNHU with a 3.0 GPA or above. I think a way for me to accomplish this goal is to stay focused on the tasks at hand, maintain a good relationship with my advisors and to utilize some of the tutoring options that are available to me as a student. Another personal goal is to work on myself, mentally. I cannot be a good mom or wife when I have the stress, anxiety and depression that I do. A way to help accomplish this goal is to not only start speaking with a psychiatrist (first appointment is August 4th) but to also have my thyroid checked.…

Being a student is never easy, especially when having to work persistently and being told that the definition of the effort you’ve put in is one number under 5. Having a higher grade point average does not mean the student is better fit for certain elite colleges, a student with a lower GPA and higher work ethic may be able and ready for the hard work involved in college. Having a stronger work-ethic, being persistent, and studying hard is what I believe should get students into colleges. Having an end goal and achieving long term goals will benefit one’s success over time. Making goals to get an A on the test math test will obviously help with the number in the grade book, but once a student has the idea that numbers are what make them smart, the long-term goals are lost.…
