The Importance Of Teamwork

Teamwork is the process of working well with a group of people to meet an aim and is important in improving the health and quality of life of an individual with dementia. ("When was the last time you said this?", 2016)
In health and social care, a team consists of many individuals, the service user, health professionals, relatives, care workers and many more. Health professionals that may be involved are a GP, an occupational therapist, a nurse and social services. As part of a team, each individual can use their roles to meet the objectives, merging their roles with other people to provide care for the person living with dementia.
When working as part of a team, four factors are important. These factors are communication, co-ordination, co-operation and respect. Communication is the exchanging of information through speech or writing. (2011-2016, 2016) This will be used in teamwork when providing care for an individual with dementia. For example, if a GP thinks it is necessary to refer the individual to an occupational therapist, it is their responsibility to communicate all of the information regarding their condition to improve their health and make sure they are getting the correct care from the occupational therapist.

This involves helping make decisions with the professional which can improve their experience and health and quality outcomes. Person centred care can be positive for health professional as well as the individual because it improves their performance as a professional. If an individual has dementia, person centred care will allow them to feel their needs are being taken into account and they will not feel isolated from the process. Finally, person centred care values better for money as it focuses on the needs of the people who use it rather than the convenience of the health
