Cynthia Linville, a CSUS English Dept. alumna, states, “College students may be surprised by the importance of on-the-job writing and may feel overwhelmed by the high standards of writing that employers demand "(Linville, 15). Building better English writing skills in college is not only important for me, but it can have an effect on whether I will be prepared or not prepared for my future career. Throughout high school, English essay writing helped me see certain texts in a different way. There were all kinds of essays we had to write such as: persuasive, descriptive, personal statements, and so on. Knowing the basics of writing an essay allowed me to learn new ways of writing essays. The personal statement was a new one for me in senior year. I had never written one so I didn’t really grasp the idea. All I did was start writing it like a basic five paragraph essay. I then went to my teacher and she helped me restructure it, and I had learned how to write a personal essay. Knowing how to write up a basic essay is important because it will make it easier to adapt to different styles of essay writings. Being able to adapt to different writing styles will help in properly writing papers, for my future career, and allow me to be easily understood by my …show more content…
Sean Trotman and Laurie Patsalides, who wrote "Reasons Learning College Writing is Important", state, "Learning college writing is important to a career in a variety of ways. College writing improves students’ ability to express themselves formally on paper and as a result, will often improve their ability to communicate their thoughts verbally"(Patsalides, 11). With short answer exams it allowed me to write down what I know and better communicate to others what I knew. The test in AP Biology consisted of one to three short question responses after the multiple choice. These short answer questions really tested ideas that I would only know the answer to if I read the chapter. Most students would not read the chapter and of course the test grade would show that. For those who did read, once I got the short answers back, I could see what information I did not absorb from the reading and you could go back to know the information. The teacher could also see what he might want to teach more about to help the students. With the use of short answer questions, they could be asked what one learned in one chapter and the student could really see if they need to study more for their class. Being able to give a long response to a single question is very important. In my future it can show employers what I really know and if they want me for the job. They can quickly test my knowledge and

Didion mentions writing to “find out what [she’s] thinking, what [she’s] looking at,[...] and what it means”(Didion). While my situation is not as dire, writing supplements my ability to think critically. In my head, I think about one idea at a time. On paper, these ideas all gather together. A writing piece is like a graph to me; unorganized, listed numbers are hard to derive data from, but a bar graph allows the viewer to notice patterns, trends, and create their own interpretation of the data because they can view it all at once.…

What does writing mean to me? Everyone has a different personality and me being less of an outspoken person writing therefore plays a major role in my daily life. Writing is the main way in which I express myself, whether it be from doing class activities or just by me communicating with my friends via text messages, it also provides me with the opportunity to freely and comfortable express my thoughts for example in any individuals life there is a time when he/she experiences some form of struggle and I was no different therefore when I go threw these trying times I write about these experiences, and this frees my mind. Painting an Essay My writing process is similar to making art in many ways. When painting, one has to be delicate and deliberate, hoping for the best, but working with mistakes. The colors on the canvas are softly brushed onto the paper, and the sketch below drafts a form created from the depths of the mind. Every word must come together to create an image that speaks to the audience.…

Final Exam Option 1 Being in several college classes and taking two English classes. I have seen a lot of papers that have been required to write and turn in. I have progressed and critique my writing so that I was able to make major improvements over the past year and half or so here at JCCC. Looking at paper’s that I wrote when I first started going here, to where I am now, is somewhat embarrassing comparing my writing skills from then and now show great improvements. Most of those improvements are from me asking questions and learning from my professors here at JCCC.…

When acquiring new skills, I usually think to myself, “How is this skill going to come in handy when I enter the working world?” If I cannot think of any purpose for knowing the skill, then I tend to forget about it. For example, I do not see any using for knitting except to pass the time and I do not plan on taking a class about how to knit anytime soon. One thing I do think is important to learn and always improve on would be my writing skills. I figure no matter where my career takes me whether it be on stage, backstage, or even being a stay at home mom I will always be writing.…

It is my belief that three of the most valuable skills one can have in life are public speaking, reading comprehension, and writing. These three skills are vital to everyday life, and I feel that everyone should strive to master these skills to the best of their ability. Out of the three techniques, I would have to concede that writing is by far my weakest. However, the eight weeks I have spent in Writing 101 have truly helped me to become a better writer. Over the course of those eight weeks my writing skills, that had been suffering from years of atrophy, were challenged; the biggest challenge of all being the research paper I did on the use of the atomic bomb.…

I’m the kind of writer who likes to take their time to plan out what to write before I put it together. Once I have my thoughts down on paper I piece them together. I like to read over my writing a few times just to make sure nothing was forgotten, misspelled, or added incorrectly. Honestly, when it comes to writing, I’m kind of a perfectionist just like I happen to be with everything else (photography, baking, any arts and crafts and so much more).…

Behind the Scenes of Letters and Words We live in a generation that relies on texting, instant messaging and social media to communicate. None of which require the proper necessities when actually writing but instead consist of abbreviation, misspelled words, lack of punctuation and the list could go on. Writing seems as if it is becoming less and less of a thing as life goes on and technology grows. The thought of writing and reading going extinct one day is a very scary view and something we should never let happen. This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
