Improper Waste Management Essay

As the name implies waste management has to do with the activities one should take in order to reduce the amount of waste generated. Improper waste disposal is one of the major environmental issues we are faced with in our today’s world. This is because of our habit of over consumption. This habit has made us blinded to the fact that each and every one of us contributes to the large amount of waste produced and not only big companies. I feel this issue is very critical and we all should show concern because in the long run, if we can’t appropriately manage our waste we would be faced with larger problems such as health issues and increase in pollution. We have cheated nature enough; I think it’s time for us to rectify it. Let’s bring back …show more content…
Looking at some African countries for example, they have becoming dumping grounds for developed nations. Some developed countries send their worn out materials to African countries, I really wonder what they expect us to do with these materials since it has already been condemned. This brings me to the biasness of the media; the media only covers the perspective of these large companies which produce most of the waste generated. These companies tell the public during interviews that little or no damage is caused by their waste disposal methods. But when we manage get Intel from people who live near areas where waste is disposed of, they tell us how their children are suffering from diseases like dysentery and …show more content…
I learnt that most if not all environmental issues are connected. This means that one environmental issue can foster the growth of another issue and when one environmental issue is controlled another issue is controlled as well. For instance when waste isn’t properly managed or disposed this can lead to increase in pollution or soil degradation. These results could occur because waste dumped indiscriminately on landfills could find their way into water bodies which can lead to water pollution and the death of some fishes. Also the stench from landfills causes air pollution. Some of chemicals used in making some of these products that are now waste might penetrate through the soil and cause the soil to lose its nutrient (soil degradation). We generate so much waste because some people are unaware of the need to re use things and consume less. This ignorance is because our government has failed to include environmental studies in the curriculum of elementary and high schools. If we could train children to become environmental conscious at this tend age, when they get older they won’t have issues living right. Also there would be reduced amount of environmental

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…
