Two sources of latent conflict come from miscommunication and a legacy of past conflicts. Allison and Penelope have a legacy of past conflicts, both women as Craig said, “have a bad history” of interacting with one another in the past, but they both had the expectation that they will encounter one another in the future (Conrad & Poole, 1998 and Maruca, 1998). In the past, Allison went to Craig about how Penelope alluded to a client that it was Allison’s fault that a campaign went over budget, when the three of them talked it out they all agreed that it was a miscommunication (Maruca, 1998). Penelope offered to write a letter to explain the situation, but Allison declined because it would look bad for the company (Maruca, 1998). The resolution of this conflict is in the favor of Penelope because there is no action being taken to correct any assumptions made by the client about Allison, and Allison has begun to resent Penelope which has overtime grown and become a part of a larger conflict that Craig is talking to Maggie about. In the case of this latent conflict, both women realize that this is a mixed-motive situation, they have incentives to cooperate and compete – they both know that they are going to be working together in the future so they need to reach a cooperative outcome to conflicts (Conrad & Poole, 1998). He thinks that it is harder to monitor how people feel and interact when they are communicating via email and voice mail. Craig also feels as though he is left out of the loop in conflicts until the conflict is already resolved or it is too late to come to a solution that appeases both parties.
c. Conflict Interaction
The third phase is conflict interaction, which is the parties’ response to a perceived conflict which is made up of communication, of interactive cycles of messages, responses, and counter responses (Conrad & Poole, 1998). Once these cycles commence the outcome is not in the control of one participant, parties can make choices about how they respond based off of clues that they get form the other party’s communication (Conrad & Poole, 1998). The interaction between Allison, Craig, and Penelope show this cycle of conflict
