Before Impressionism, art was very finely detailed with a realistic approach and was painted in art studios. Also, it followed a certain strictness that artists followed so that their art could be considered fine art. Impressionist, such as Claude Monet changed this idea of art and introduced paintings with pure colors and paintings that were more expressive and loose. They used looser brushes and colors that were more intense. Also, artists used natural colors. Another thing that set the impressionists apart is that they would paint “en plein air”. “En plein air” is basically known as outdoors painting. This is a different approach to the studio crafted artwork that was present at the time. The reason that outdoor paintings became very popular and widely used by impressionists is that it portrayed the natural use of colors and was very expressive, which was what these artists were in search of. When I look at any impressionist artwork, or especially any of Monet’s painting, I see very defined colors with a less defined or in some instances hazy depictions of people or places. It is very expressive and almost all paintings are painted in an outdoor location. A very famous painting by Monet called “Sunrise” perfectly exemplifies everything about impressionism. Instead of being more realistic, it is more expressive. What sets this art style different from other styles is that when I look at a piece of impressionist artwork, it gives me a slow flow of different emotions. At first I feel confused to what the painting portrays, then I see the artists use of expressive, pure, and intense colors that gives a soothing, calming, and even exciting feeling at the same time which is quite strange. Also since most of the paintings are painted outdoors, with an outdoor scenery, it adds to the emotions. One can stare at painting such as “Sunrise” by Monet for a long time and get a random bag of different emotions. Alongside to the emotions that this style gives, it can even give memories. By looking at different paintings, I feel like I was at those locations are often tried to remember where I was at a similar situation even though I have never been to any such place. I believe that Monet made this painting to show the beauty of capturing the right moment. He painted a beautiful sunrise with the overall scenery portraying everyday life on the riverside. Another reason that I believe that Monet painted this to show the beauty of painting something at the right moment is that this is what the impressionist era is all about. They used time and the atmosphere around
