III. Summary Impression of Interview. In lots of ways, I feel as though my interview was rather successful; in others, I feel as though I fell short. One thing I pride myself on, has always been my ability to connect with people. My experience with JF however was quite different, particularly my real interview rather than the role-play I did with Brianna. I found I didn’t easily understand or sympathize with issues that JF struggled with, as I’d never been in a situation anywhere near similar to hers. For this reason, I chose to focus more on exploring and learning more about her, to help both of us find common ground and to provide me with background information that would better help me as a social worker, or potential social worker, connect …show more content…
I feel as though my diversity in regard of pulling in different skills was extremely well done. Although execution lacked in some, which I’ll discuss in the next section, I do think I was successful in using basic skills. Before interviewing Brianna as JF, I did a lot of preliminary planning, looking at facts I’d written down about our actual interview with JF using it as though it were case notes from a different social worker. I also prepared a list of questions I’d want to ask and did some serious self-exploration. I believe we’ve discussed this, but senior citizens have never been an interest area of mine. In reference to major skills such as orienting the client, feedback, exploring and assessment, active listening, and even some goal setting, I tried to keep on track and as relevant and realistic as possible. I feel as though my biggest mistake skills wise, was not following through with the ending skills. I neglected to review the process, or point out endings or even discuss future meetings. In retrospect, I realize this was a large mistake on my part; in order to keep with the role-play I should’ve addressed this and probably have even gone deeper into establishing detailed goals. Because of our lack of time, I believe I really tried to get too many things into our interview. With that however, I do feel as though I used far more skills, and found while reading through my transcript afterwards I used different skills without even meaning too. This gave me hope that social work skills are starting to seep into my dialogue with clients without having to necessarily

I wish I used less fillers and mazes and was more precise. Sometimes, I would use too much selective attention, for example I focused so much on the interviewee’s family relationships and reciprocal treatment, that I forgot to ask about her resentment for putting others first. I also could have questioned her coping skills regarding her family’s laxity. Whereas in interview one, I believe my strengths included providing great minimal encouragers, nodding my head, counselor congruence, and showing greater interest.…

I thought that during the interview I would have keep thinking about the skills I need to use instead focusing in on what was most important, which was Alex and what he said to say. During the interview, skills such as open- and closed-end questions, furthering responses using prompts and reflecting content seemed to be second nature. Instead of making sure that I was using a certain skill, I just went with the flow of the conversation. The challenging part of the interview was that I was afraid I wasn’t using a good variety of skills. I noticed that I was often giving Alex multiple verbal and nonverbal prompts as well as reflecting content.…

Valeria Johnson coming to me today made me realized that although we work together and have a good working relationship she was willing after our session to tell me she would work with me in this health concern. Most people for the most part do not like being told what to do and it gets worse if it is about their bodies and how they should live. What does MI look like? It involves asking questions and responding to patients' comments in a way that validates their experiences, helps them develop reasons for making health behavior changes, and acknowledges patients' control of the decision to change. So a better way to get to help her was introduced motivational interviewing (MI) and by using this method I was providing advice and feedback.…
